The Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Test is designed to provide graduate schools with a common
measure for comparing the qualifications of applicants. A large number of Engineering as well as Management
schools, use GRE scores to determine eligibility of a student for their programs and for merit-based grants and
fellowships.
Preparing for the GRE can help you get into the grad or post grad school of your choice and can greatly increase
your chances of getting financial aid. An increasingly number of B schools have started accepting GRE score
for their management programs but please check with the university of your choice about the acceptance of
GRE scores before starting your preparation.
Based on geographical conditions, the GRE General Test is offered in two formats
a) Computer-based test
b) Paper-based test
In most of the countries such as United states, Canada, India, Nepal etc, the GRE general test is computer based.
Paper-based GRE General Test administrations are offered in other areas of the world where computer-based
testing is not available.
If you are unsure which test to choose, pls check the following link--- Test format for my location?

Test Structure
The GRE General computer based test measures skills that have been developed over a long period of time and
are not necessarily related to any particular field of study.
The New GRE is a Sectional adaptive test.
o
The New GRE test is adaptive by section. i.e performance on the first section determine the difficulty
level and score of the second section.
o Within a section, you can skip, navigate, mark and change your responses. Once you submit a section,
you cannot return to it .
o You can leave a question un- answered, which was not possible in the previous format.
The test is composed of three sections namely
Verbal Reasoning (VR)
Quantitative Aptitude (QA)
Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA)

score may be included.
Analytical Writing
Will contain 2 sections of 30 minutes each
a) Issue: Students will be given an issue to analyze.
Students would need to discuss whether they agree or disagree and the reasons/ examples for the same.
Students will be given specific assignments for how they should respond to the issue given.
b) Argument: Students will be given an argument to analyze.
The argument will include identifying assumptions, strengthening the argument, formulating questions based
upon the argument, and others.
Quantitative Aptitude
Will contain 2 sections of 35 minutes each
Will contain approximately 20 questions per section
The revised Quantitative Reasoning section contains four types of questions:

Each question appears either independently as a discrete question OR as part of a set of questions called a Data
Interpretation set. All of the questions in a Data Interpretation set are based on the same data presented in tables,
graphs or other displays of data. Below are descriptions, directions and samples of each type of question.
Multiple-choice Questions : Student has to select either one or multiple correct choices for the given question.
The number of choices per question can vary greatly, you can expect up to
10-12 answer choices/ question. But in general you should expect 5 choices per question
NO CREDIT FOR PARTIALLY CORRECT ANSWERS.
Numeric Entry Questions : Student has to enter his own answer in the text box provided rather than selecting
from multiple choices. The answer needs to be entered as per the given directions.
Quantitative Comparison Questions : Student will be provided two separate quantities in Column A and
Column B . Based on several given conditions the student has to choose whether
Column A is greater
Column B is greater
Column A is equal to Column B
The relation between A and B cannot be judged on the basis of given information.

In sum, the stress on calculations and geometry has been greatly reduced, one can expect more real life
problems and a greater emphasis on analytical ability.

Verbal Reasoning
Will contain 2 sections of 30 minutes each
Will contain approximately 20 questions per section
The revised Verbal Reasoning section contains three types of questions:
Each question appears either independently as a discrete question OR as part of a set of questions called a
Reading comprehension. All of the questions in a Reading comprehension set are based on the same given
passage.
Multiple-choice Questions : Student has to select either one or multiple correct choices for the given question.
A student should expect 5 - 6 choices per question, depending upon the question type.
Select the sentence Questions : Student has to select a sentence from the passage on the basis of the question.

asked to select two equivalent words or phrases to complete a sentence but keeping the meaning of the sentence
intact.

In sum, dont be deluded that the role of vocabulary has been marginalized; its just that the stress now is
on usage of vocabulary in real life rather than on vocabulary usage in isolation. In reading
comprehension a shift towards critical reasoning is observed, so again there is more stress on the
analytical abilities of the test taker.
