When someone is not the author of the

action but caused it to happen by asking


or paying someone to do it, we use the
structure below:
HAVE + OBJECT + PARTICIPLE
The verb to have is used in any tense,
according to when the action took place.
The main verb (that represents the
action) is used in the participle. We dont
mention the author of the action, either
because its obvious or because its
irrelevant.

Situation 1: Mary washed the car on Sunday.


As you can see, Mary herself washed the car. She is the
author of the action.

Situation 2: Mary had the car washed.


As you can see, Mary neither washed the car nor is the
author of the action, but she caused the action to happen,
either asking or paying for it.

Mom asked the boys


to make the cake.

Arnold will ask Sue


to trim the bushes.

Leila will ask her


brother to feed the
dog.

Monica asked her


husband to take Bill
to school.

John has asked his


brother to write his
composition.

Ann should ask the


secretary to update
her mail.
