Traditional Techniques
2015-16 Class Syllabus

This is a semester course that focuses on exploration of a variety of traditional art techniques that have been used
throughout history. The focus of the class will be hands-on art production. With each technique, students will have the
opportunity to develop their own direction. Creativity/originality, craftsmanship and art vocabulary will also be main
components of the course. The assigned projects will provide opportunities for students to develop and demonstrate
progress towards mastery of the Iowa Art Standards. Students will employ a 5-Step Studio Process when creating their
artwork: 1. Plan and Practice, 2. Begin to Create, 3. Revise, 4. Add Finishing Touches, & 5. Share and Reflect (Davis

In this class
Students will understand, select and apply media,
techniques and processes.
Students will understand and apply elements and
principles of design and other art structures.
Students will consider, select, apply and evaluate a
range of subject matter, symbols and ideas.
Students will understand the visual arts in relation
to history and cultures.
Students will reflect upon and assess the
characteristics and merits of their own and others
work.
Students will make connections between the visual
arts, other disciplines and daily life.
