Curriculum Map

This curriculum comes from the Chandler Unified School District website. This
curriculum is for high school teachers and can be used for grades 9-12 grades. The lessons are
created for ninth grade students at Perry High School. The lessons are used in a first hour class
which has 27 students. The academic levels of the students vary along with the physical ability
levels.

Sleep Concept Map


PO 7: Reflect upon the mental benefits of participation in physical activity.
Teacher will teach a short lesson on how sleep is beneficial and the start to be physically
active. Students will then work in groups to create a concept map with sleep as the main idea.
They will state the benefits of sleep and the recommended hours of sleep teenagers need per
night. They will also create subcategories about how sleep is important to mental benefits of
physical

activity. After they create a concept map about sleep and mental health benefits, students will
write a one page paper answering the following questions:

Why do people need sleep?


How does sleep help physical performance?
How do you feel when you get the right amount of sleep? Not enough sleep?

Sustainability Presentation
PO 5. Explain and create a physical activity that demonstrates a safe environment for self
and others.
Students will work in groups and pretend they are part of a community that needs help
renovating and keeping sports fields clean. People go to games and leave their trash behind
around the fields and mix trash and recyclables together. What can they do as a community do to
help create sustainable fields for people to use and help clean up the community? Students will

create a 3-5 minute presentation stating what they will do to help create a healthy sustainable
environment for their community and how this could promote physical activity outside of school.

Stress Management
PO 3. Participate in physical activities that contribute to the attainment of personal goals
and the maintenance of lifetime wellness.
Teacher will give a short lesson on the effects of stress on the body. Teacher will review
the cognitive, physiological, behavioral, and emotional effects of stress. Teacher will also review
the difference between eustress, bad stress, and how it plays a role in performance. Students will
complete a quick write, writing about which sports or physical activities they use or would use as
a stress management technique. Students will also begin to keep an activity log over the course
of the semester and at the end of the semester write a reflection about the use of physical activity
as a stress management technique or any new techniques they have developed.
