Textbook Avancemos 1 Each student will be assigned a textbook for which he/she is responsible. The student is to
bring the book to class daily. If he/she forgets the book, he/she will be given a warning for the first offense. After
the first time, the student will be given lunch detention every time he/she forgets the book.
Course Description The first in a series of Spanish courses develops understanding and facility in speaking, reading,
and writing the language. Students learn the basic sounds while practicing vocabulary and using simple sentences
in conversational situations. They gain a basic knowledge of contemporary Hispanic culture as they participate in
learning activities.
Behavior Expectations 1) Respect all with who you are in contact (teacher, classmates, etc) 2) Complete all
assignments when given to you. 3) Come to class on time; you are to be in your assigned seat when the tardy
bell rings. Students who arrive tardy will be written up according to LHS policy. 4) Come to class prepared with
necessary materials book, writing utensil (pen or pencil), notebook/binder, notes, vocabulary, homework, etc
5) Cheating will not be tolerated in any forms. This includes plagiarism, copying the work of a classmate
and submitting it as your own on exams, quizzes, classwork, etc Any offense will result in an automatic
0 for all involved. During test/quizzes/exams, students are not to talk for any reason. 6) Students are
expected to try all assignments. I cant or I dont know are not acceptable answers. Ask for help!
Electronic Devices Cell phones, Ipods, etc are not to be used or seen during the school day. A holder will be
located in the back of the classroom with numbered pockets. Each student will be given a number and his/her cell
phone is to be placed in the designated pocket. Students will be permitted to get their phones at the end of class,
as instructed by the teacher. If seen, the device will be confiscated, given to an administrator and the student will
be written up for insubordination for not following instructions. The only exception to this rule is if the students
are given specific permission from the teacher to use the device during a specific activity.
Grading Grades will be comprised of many components involving participation, quizzes, exams, homework,
classwork, pronunciation, presentations/projects, bell ringers, etc I will follow the Harrison County grading
scale.
Grades will be given on a point base system and therefore the amount of points per 6weeks can vary.
Point distribution on exams will be outlined on each section of the exam. Generally, quizzes are 20 points,
tests/projects are 40-60. All exams, quizzes, etc will be announced ahead of time there are no pop quizzes.
Students will also be assigned one country report per six-weeks. More information about these reports will be
forthcoming. At the beginning of unit, I will go over all tests/quiz dates with the students and have them write
them in their agendas. Also, they will be on a dry erase calendar which is located in the front of the room.
LiveGrades I update LiveGrades very regularly. Students should check their LiveGrades and use it as
another method of determining make-up work. All tests/quizzes that are missed will be given a 0 until made up
(within the allotted time) and make-up will appear in the comments section.
Homework will be graded on completion and will usually be 10 points. However, in order to be
complete, the students have to put effort into the work, not just have written answers so that it appears complete.
Additionally, homework must be completely before entering the classroom. Students who are seen completing
the assignment before it is collected the day it is do, will receive a zero on the assignment.

In an effort to diminish academic dishonesty, the student must place his/her homework in the designated
basket by the tardy bell. Homework that is not in the basket by that time will be considered incomplete and will
not be accepted. Once homework is placed in the basket, it is not to be removed by anyone, but the teacher. To
aide in the process, a reminder will be with the bell ringer on days when homework is due.
Bell ringers will be on the board daily and are to be completed as soon as the tardy bell rings. The
students will take the initiative to begin these and the teacher should not have to repeatedly instruct the students to
work on them. The students will receive a weekly total grade (3points/day) for their participation and completion
of the bell ringers. The student will not receive full credit daily credit on the bell ringer, if they are not
completing the bell ringer independently and in a timely manner.
Make-up work Most importantly, all work missed due to an absence is the students responsibility. I
will not track you down to tell you about/give you your work. In most instances you will be exempt from work
that is not a test or quiz (for example, homework or classwork). Exempt assignments do not affect your grade.
When you ask me, I will tell you what needs to be made up and what I will exempt. The key is you must ask me.
Use the calendar in the room and your agenda to determine if you missed a test or quiz.
You must make arrangements with me to meet before school, after school or during lunch/AA to make up
the assignment. I want at least 1 day notice; do not just appear in my room and ask for your work because it will
not be ready. Make-up tests/quizzes will not be completed during class time.
Since quiz/test announcements are made at the beginning of a unit, if you miss the day prior to the
quiz/test, you will be expected to take it on the day scheduled.
All make-up work must be completed prior to the end of the 6-weeks. I will announce the due date for
make-up work a few days prior to the end of the 6weeks. Once a due date is reached, all work not completed
becomes a zero; no argument, no exception! My suggestion is that if you must miss a test/quiz; make it up as
soon as possible while the information is still fresh.
Hall Passes Students have 4 minutes between classes and their lunch periods to use the restroom/get drinks. You
need to do that on your time; class time is my time! If I deem a students requests for or length of hall passes
to be excessive, I will deny that student hall passes. He/she will no longer be allowed to leave the room. Only
one student is permitted to leave the room at a time. When a student leaves the room, he/she must fill out the
information sheet on the clipboard, get the teachers signature and carry the clipboard with him/her.
*Students should keep this syllabus for the remainder of the semester.
