daughtergo,andeventuallyheagreedtoletherreturntohermotherforsixmonthseveryyear.
Duringthewinter,Demeterisseparatedfromherdaugherandmissesher.Inhergrief,she
doesntletplantsgrow.Whenherdaughtercomeshome,thegoddessishappy,andsummer
comestoGreece.TotheGreeks,thisstoryexplainedwhywintercameeveryyear.

HeroesandMythology

NotallGreekmythswereaboutgods.Manytoldabouttheadventuresofgreatheroes.Someof
theseheroeswererealpeople,whileotherswerenot.TheGreekslovedtotellthestoriesof
heroeswhohadspecialabilitiesandfacedterriblemonsters.Thepeopleofeachcityhadtheir
favoritehero,usuallysomeonefromthere.

PeoplefromnorthernGreecetoldmythsaboutJasonandhowhesailedacrosstheseasin
searchofagreattreasure,fightingenemiesthewholeway.

PerhapsthemostfamousofalltheGreekheroeswasamancalledHerakles.Themyths
explainhowHeraklesfoughtmanymonstersandperformednearlyimpossibletasks.For
example,hefoughtthehydra,ahugesnakewithnineheadsandpoisonousfangs.Everytime
Heraklescutoffoneofthemonstersheads,twomoreheadsgrewinitsplace.Intheend,
Herakleshadtoburnthehydrasneckeachtimehecutoffaheadtokeepanewheadfrom
growing.PeoplefromallpartsofGreeceenjoyedstoriesaboutHeraklesandhisgreatdeeds.
