Ms. Emily Dressing,
My name is Kesar Ram. I am an accounting major at Syracuse University entering my
senior year. As I began planning out my final year of classes, I noticed your writing 307
class still had a few spots open. I am very interested in taking this writing class in the fall
and was hoping for a spot in your section specifically.
Writing 307 is an upper level professional writing course that focuses on everyday
professional writing, proper methods of marketing yourself professionally, and many
other useful writing based skills for the business world. Being that I am a finance and
accounting double major, I am very interested in honing my skills in areas such as email
recommendations and personal profiles. After reading the course description and your
syllabus, I really want to take this course with you because of your realistic and office
style classroom approach. Just like you, I believe that if a student is to prepare to
properly write in a business setting, they should learn in the same type of setting. Your
teaching style is very clear and straight forward, which helps for students like me that
often become confused by complex class schedules.
I also believe that, given the nature of the course and your teaching style, there is a lot I
can bring to your class to make it even more impactful and engaging. I have spent the
last 3 semesters as the treasurer for my fraternity, which required me to keep consistent
long distance relationships with general headquarters and supporting alumni. This
position allowed me to develop my skills in email writing and request letters. I also spent
this summer interning with a large accounting firm called PriceWaterhouseCoopers
where I spent a lot of time creating a personal profile on their databases and emailing
clients. These experiences have given me hands on experience in what to do and what
not to do as far as professional writing. I also believe I have a very energetic and
enthusiastic attitude toward group work and class activities. For these reasons, I believe
I can provide helpful and unique insights during class discussions.

In short, I am very interested in taking your class this fall. I feel there are very important
skills I can learn from this class and your teaching style that will prove very helpful in my
career. I also believe that, with my prior work experience and enthusiasm, I can provide
some great insights for you and my fellow classmates. I hope you will consider me for a
spot in your class. Thank you for your time.
