TIME: 45-60mins
UNIT AIM: Students will develop an understanding of the concepts of measuring the area and
perimeter of different shapes, including squares and rectangles, initially using familiar units and
learning to use the appropriate metric units. They will be able to calculate the area and perimeter of a
range of shapes, and be able to identify the appropriate instruments to measure different shapes and
objects.
LESSON OUTCOMES:
Use scaled instruments to measure and compare lengths, masses, capacities and
temperatures (ACMMG084)
Calculate the perimeter and area of rectangles using familiar metric units (ACMMG109)
Solve problems involving the comparison of lengths and areas using appropriate units
(ACMMG137)

A4 dot paper, different sizes
Geoboards (1 between 2 students)
Elastic bands
STUDENT ASSESSMENT:
Were the students able to understand the concept of total square units in a 2D shape?
Were the students able to stay on task during the partner activity (especially appropriate use of rubber
bands)?
Did they complete the task appropriately, and participate sufficiently during class discussions?
SELF ASSESSMENT:
Were the activities appropriate for the students/age level etc.? Was it appropriate to allow the use of
rubber bands safely?
Did they grasp the concept thoroughly enough to move on to metric units in the next lesson?

COMMENTS
25mins 3 EXPLORATION/PRACTICE(group/individual)
In pairs students will be given a geoboard and a handful of
elastic bands.
One student will create their own shapes for their partner
to calculate how many square units it is, and copy into
their books using different colour to demonstrate each unit
clearly.
