promise fulfilled at
regional conferences
For a year, regional directors
promised that changes were
forthcoming in regional conferences,
based on the 2013-2014 Regional
Conference Survey responses. So,
conference attendees were gratified
(and some chagrined) to find that
promise fulfilled in 2015.
The first noticeable change
came at the opening session, when
both incoming and outgoing
presidents were presented during
the flag procession instead of at
the presidents banquet in the U.S.
and Canada. This combining of the
two traditions was welcomed by
attendees.
The last noticeable change was
that the song was not sung at the
end of the conference. Members are
equally divided on this change; some
missed it greatly while others were

Survey responses expressed
members dislike of lengthy statenight programs; those presentations

Finding value in attending state

organization meetings is often very
difficult for working members, and
providing professional incentives
often means the difference between
attending or not. It is also an
opportunity to encourage nonmembers to attend.
Arkansas State Organization
offers Arkansas Department of
Education-approved Professional
Development (PD) hours to
members and non-members at state
organization meetings, seminars
and conventions. Sharon Rapp, a
trained contact person on the state
organizations Educational Excellence
Committee, receives proposals
to present, ascertains approvable
content of presentations, and submits
them for approval to the Arkansas
DOE within a prescribed time frame.
Curriculum correlations are
published in programs (and on
the state organization website) so
that teachers may attain district
administrative approval as needed.
Participants receive stickers to place
on a grid as evidence of completion.
At the conclusion of each session,
participants are asked to evaluate
the sessions. This information is
provided to the DOE.
Arkansas educators are
appreciative of these PD
opportunities, provided at no
additional charge. Non-members
learn about the professionalism
of the Society and often become
potential members.
Does your state organization
partner with your Department of
Education to offer approved PD to
active educators? This is another way
to make members matter!
