What's It All About?

The thirty-first day of October, Nineteen

Hundred Ninety-Seven
October 31, 1997
Oct. 31, 1997
10/31/97
31 October 1997

As you can see in the box at

right, there are many different
ways to write a date.. A formal
wedding invitation usually spells
out every word and numeral. A
quick note might abbreviate the
month or just use numerals. In Europe people often write the dw
before the month-31/10/97 instead of 10/31/97. When you write, you
should follow the usual pattern for dates used in the United StateS.

USING COMMAS WITH DATES

Let's Find Out

Notice the dates in the sentences below. See if you can discover the correct pattern.
Model Sentences

3. Although Mavis Max, the mayor of Timetrip, was born on September 23,
1960, she wears a silk bonnet from 1870.
When a date includes the month, day, and year (October 26, 1937), the year is
set off with commas. Usually set off means that two commas are used, one
before and one after the year as in model sentences 2 and 3. Sometimes only
one comma is neededwhen the year comes at the very end of the sentence
(model 1).
