Philosophy of

Education

CONSTRUCTIVISTS

Lev Vygotsky
! Students learn

by doing rather
than observing.
Students bring
prior knowledge
into a learning
situation in
which they must
critique and reevaluate their
understanding
of it.

Jean Piaget
! Learning is a dynamic

process comprising
successive stages of
adaption to reality
during which learners
actively construct
knowledge by creating
and testing their own
theories of the world.

John Dewey
! Students would

engage in real-world,
practical workshops in
which they would
demonstrate their
knowledge through
creativity and
collaboration.
Students should be
provided with
opportunities to think
from themselves and
articulate their
thoughts.

INSPRIRING
EDUCATORS

Sir Ken Robinson

Sir Robinson is a huge advocate

cultivating childrens creativity.

His statement If youre not prepared to be

wrong, youll never be original touched a
chord since there are times I feel the
educational system is all about filling in
little bubbles with a number 2 pencil and
there is no other way to teach and / or
learn. Sadly, all the learning and attention
we give to multiple intelligences and
differential instruction seems moot within
LAUSD and that can be frustrating.

When I see a creative student in the

classroom, I encourage her/him to express
her/himself with a particular art form
rather than sticking to a rigid onedimensional essay.
Embracing multiple
intelligences within the classroom enables
the students to shine and I truly believe
that.

of

Sheryl WuDunn
! Ms. WuDunn is, to me, an amazing

trailblazer. Shes an incredibly successful

businesswoman, journalist, and mother.

! I am very inspired by females who change

the world and the way we think. I was

moved by Ms. WuDunns Half the Sky
and the revelations that women are
disappearing from the face of the planet
each and every day.

! How can we, as a world, be proud of

education when half of our demographic

is ignored in large parts of the world?

! I also believe in micro loans and her

discussion that a small loan will change

not only a young womans life, but also her
familys life, and her entire community is
highly significant. Ms. WuDunn believes
little things in life can be immensely
transformative and reminds us to change
the world!

Rita Pierson
! Ms. Piersons fundamental

commentary on relationships is
essential for all. She valued the
importance of human connection.
She challenged everyone to Leave a
legacy of relationships.

! Her beliefs that teaching, learning,

growing is based on those

relationships opened my mind (and
heart and soul) to the serious career
change to teaching.

! Teaching and learning should bring

JOY.Every child deserves a
champion, an adult who wont give
up on them. As we sit in
classrooms and observe, teach, and
motivate young minds, it is easy to
see the teachers who have shut
down and do more harm than good.
These children need a champion, a
voice, and a leader.
