Students will:
Develop a social awareness of the availability to clean
drinking water
Develop an understanding of global disparity, and in
that, the availability of clean drinking water
Be given the opportunity to participate in a problem
solving activity that relates to the issue of inequality in
water distribution
Pre assessment: (hand raising survey) How many of
you used clean water today? And how many of you
dont know where to get clean water?
Group activity: (clean water distribution challenge)
Final assessment: (class discussion) How did the
separate countries feel about distributing the clean
water equally? How did the countries feel when the two
countries worked together?
PowerPoint
7 country sheets that show the facts of clean water
availability (Canada, USA, Norway, India, Nepal, Haiti,
and Uganda)
Plastic cups (with a line to signify equal distribution)
8 water bottles (Canada:2, USA: 1, Norway:1, India: ,
Haiti: 1 Hidden bottle, Nepal: 1 and duct taped closed,
Uganda: 1 dirty water bottle)
Water filter/ tea strainer

Power point will be shown on board for students to see
objectives of the activity

During introduction, remaining group member will distribute


specific materials to each table.
-table 1: Canada- country sheet and 2 water bottles
-table 2: India- country sheet and 1 water bottle half full
-table 3: USA- country sheet, 1 water bottle, and a tea filter
-table 4: Uganda- country sheet, 1 water bottle labeled as
dirty
-table 5: Norway- country sheet, 1 water bottle, and a pair of
scissors
-table 6: Nepal- country sheet, 1 water bottle duct taped shut
-table 7: Haiti- country sheet, no water (it is hidden in the
classroom)
Hayley: hand out India and Uganda package
Allison: hand out Norway package
Lauren: Hand out Canada and US package
Stephani: Hand out Nepal and Haiti Package
Activity: Clean water distribution challenge
- During activity the goal of the challenge will be on the
power point board: Allison (everyone in class has to fill
their cup to the red line with clean water)
- Step 1: work with your table/ country to distribute
clean water to the red line
- Quick hand raising survey: (Hayley) how many of you
were able to distribute clean drinking water equally?
- Step 2: work with the table assigned on the board to
achieve the goal of water distribution ( think about
what you can do in real life to help the water crisis in
countries around the world)
- Within activity, as a group discuss if you achieved this
challenge and why.
Final assessment: Class discussion (sharing the experience
as a group)
- Question to stimulate discussion: (Lauren) How did
each country feel or notice when they had to distribute
clean water equally? And How did all countries feel or
notice when they worked together to distribute clean

of the issue in distributing clean water equally at a
global standard ( give class the option and recourse to
research further about the issue)
If there is extra time, let students further extend their
experience and what they feel they can do for this
issue
