Hi! My name is Mikayla Kwan and welcome to my e-portfolio.
I am a born and raised
Calgarian and completed grades 1 through 12 in a Gifted Education setting. In the fall following my graduation, I began my post-secondary education at the University of Lethbridge. I chose to pursue combined Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Education degrees, majoring in Mathematics/Mathematics Education and minoring in Religious Studies Education. I am in my third year of studies and am extremely excited to be beginning my journey in the Faculty of Education. I am passionate about teaching and mathematics and I have developed this passion through numerous opportunities. Throughout high school I tutored middle school mathematics and assisted twice a week in a Grade 5 classroom with general activities. As a result of completing grade school in a gifted education setting, I had the opportunity to work with peers with learning differences where I learned to accommodate my peers needs. I have also taught numerous sessions of elementary Sunday school. I continue to develop my instructional skills by tutoring mathematics at the high school and university level while continuing at the middle school level. I am also fortunate to work with summer camps with later elementary children. Last summer, I experienced co-instructing and co-leading a classroom for the first time and was able to learn and develop many classroom management techniques and learning strategies, especially when working with children with learning differences. I hope to continue to evolve my skills through these camps and incorporate any strategies I may learn in your classroom into my own practice this upcoming camp season. Aside for my passion for teaching and mathematics, I enjoy helping my friends and family succeed and will assist them in any way I can. This interest has lead me to become the Residence Academic Resource Coordinator at the University of Lethbridge commencing in Fall 2015, where I will promote academics in residence as well as providing study tips, workshops and exam skills to the residence population. My other interests include music (played in band for 8 years as well as the piano), baking goodies, and I am also an avid sports fan. I am extremely excited to begin my time in the Faculty of Education. I am looking forward to learning about the intricacies of teaching and how to become an excellent teacher from my peers and faculty members. I believe teaching is my calling and I am highly motivated to fulfill that calling.
