Case Study: The Soup Kitchen

September, 27th/2015
In the soup kitchen video many aspects of the PS1 module were drawn
upon. This Schools mission was to build ethical citizens with moral character,
and the soup kitchen did just that. I feel this could also fall into the health and
wellness aspect of the program of studies as it incorporates life skills. This school
field trip would require a lot of prep work. The soup kitchen would need to be
contacted so arrangements could be made. A teacher would also need to conduct
some form of assessment to figure out what skills the students require prior
to attending. A discussion would need to be held with the class so that students
can gain an understanding of why this kind of field trip is important. Besides
conducting a formative assessment prior to the visit, a teacher would also
need to conduct a formative assessment throughout the trip. This could be
done in many ways some examples would be, watching students in the
kitchen and helping them with their assigned duties. This also serves as a
great opportunity to assess if there were any gaps in the prep work. It would
be important to conduct a summative assessment after the field trip, this
would insure that the trip was successful and students gained knowledge.
There are many ways to evaluate and compare students learning, students
could write a reflective journal or engage in class discussion. Another idea I
had for a summative assessment would be to have students document their
experience and then create a video on giving back to the community.
The soup kitchen involved many life skills and I feel it would be a very
positive experience for almost any student. Giving back to the community

and feeling apart of something bigger is essential in positive child

development. Drawing upon Vyogotsky social theory that social interaction is
essential for language development and the soup kitchen was a good
opportunity for that. Children used language to read menus, instructions, communicate and
work with one another. Scaffolding is another theory of Vyogotskyv for positive
child development. In scaffolding students use language to work with peers
and teachers in order to create the necessary building blocks for successful
learning. I personally feel it is very important to teach students about
community engagement and productive citizenship. Both of these are major
aspects within my educational philosophy. Any moment can become a
teaching moment and it is important for teachers to be able to enhance the
curriculum.
