We have been focusing on questioning both

answering questions about text and asking our own
questions about text, as well as counting syllables
in words, segmenting sounds in words, and
identifying the difference between letters, words,
and sentences. We are even working on identifying
punctuation at the end of sentences, and what
they tell us about the sentence!
At Home Idea: When reading with your child, encourage
them to point out the words that they have learned! You
could also create
words and slides like ba or fa with the letters that we
have

This Months Highlights

Language Arts

We will be continuing our study on our letters of the

alphabet. We will be learning two to three new letters
each week. This instruction is primarily on letter
identification, letter sounds, and spelling patterns. It is
our hope that by the end of January, students will have
learned all of the letters in the alphabet. In Language
Arts we are also beginning to identify words that rhyme,
counting the syllables in words, and working on
sounding out simple real words, such as bag or
nonsense words, such as bem. The children are
learning to mark an x under the vowel and put an (*)
in front of the word if it is a nonsense word!

Math

In math we are continuing to learn how to count and

represent objects up to 20 in various ways drawing
objects, making tally marks, writing number sentences,
using a number line, etc. Your child should be able to
give you strategies to use to help them keep track of
the objects that they are counting or representing.
Remind them that all good mathematicians doublecheck! We will also begin measuring with this unit.

Science
The students will be continuing a unit on Trees this
month. We will examine the trees as they begin to
change color, and will be discussing what happens to
trees through the changing seasons. We will learn the
parts of a tree, why they are important, and we will also
learn about different types of trees and how to
recognize their leaves. We will practice drawing and
labeling parts of the tree and will use scientific
procedures when examining leaves, bark, and wood
samples.
