Art Lesson Plan

Title: Watercolor Resist Landscape

Unit: African Art

Grade level (s): 4-5th Grade

Medium: Watercolor

Suggested Time: 2 Class periods


Instructional Objectives (2-3):
Students will explore and invent art making techniques and approaches. As well as mix
a variety of hues to create new colors. Students will also apply watercolor paint to wet
area to blend color (wet-on-wet techniques).
Elements of Art (1-3) line, color, shape, form, space, texture, value
Principles of Design (1-3) repetition, pattern, movement, balance, emphasis, contrast, unity
Materials and Equipment: 12 x 18 multimedia white paper, crayons (all colors), cup of
water, watercolor paints, paintbrush, pencil
General Vocabulary (4-5): background, middle ground, and foreground
Art Production (based on Madeline Hunter model)

1. Anticipatory set: had a power point up with a Starry Night showing


2. State Objectives: had an example of watercolor up on the whiteboard
3. Input: Showed us a power point on landscape and then got into showings us about
the landscape and the Savannah, and what animals you might see in the Savannah.
Also showed us a game on PBSkids.org about what the Savannah is like as well as
visually seeing the animals in action in the Savannah.
4. Demonstration: Demonstrated how to begin the watercolor
5. Understanding: Made sure verbally that we understood how to do the watercolor
6. Independent Practice: Began by drawing the animals onto the multimedia paper
7. Went over pencil with a colored crayon of your choice
8. Begin by applying watercolor to multimedia paper
9. Closure: Have a class discussion about what went well and what we struggled with in
our paintings. Is there something that they would change or improve?
