Choice Reading Unit
Essential Question: What can reading teach us about ourselves and the world around us?
Major Understanding: Reading is a valuable skill that allows us to connect to a variety of
people, emotions, and situations.
Your Task:
Use the learning menu to create a Choice Reading portfolio, demonstrating your understanding
of the following topics, and your level of proficiency in our competencies so far.
Produce several artifacts from the learning menu that demonstrate your proficiency
with the reading, writing, and speaking & listening competencies below.
You must produce the following:
One artifact from the Argumentative Writing portion
One artifact from the Vocabulary portion
Choose ONE category from Characterization, Plot
Development, and Theme and produce one artifact for the category you
have chosen.
If you choose to create your own project for any of the categories, you
must have it approved by your teacher.
Compose a reflection explaining how your portfolio as a whole and how each individual
artifact within your portfolio represents your answer to the essential question, as well as
demonstrates proficiency in the reading, writing, and speaking and listening targeted
competencies.
Include a five to seven sentence reflection for each artifact
Include at least one paragraph that reflects on your portfolio as a whole
and how your final product answers the essential question
Include specific examples from your Choice Reading text(s) to contribute
to your answer to the essential question.
