Unit Rationale

This unit entitled Weather is designed for 1st grade students. This unit will integrate
numerous academic foundations and content areas while teaching the basics of what weather is
and how weather affects the lives of first grade students. The unit will focus more specifically on
the water cycle, the seasons, natural disasters, measuring weather, and clouds.
The use of various experiments, inquiries, exposure to literature, and activities will
enhance student learning and understanding as they explore the basic concepts of weather, learn
the different ways we measure weather and the tools we use, the four seasons and the changes
weather goes through during those times, the different types of clouds and how to identify them,
and the basics of the water cycle and an introduction to its most basic stages.
According to the Pennsylvania Department of Education Standards: Standard 3.3.1.A5,
4.2.1.A, and 4.2.1.D address that students will be able to identify types of weather, identify tools
used for measuring weather, and describe the path water take throughout the water cycle.
When the unit is finished students will be able to describe different types of weather,
describe the basics of the water cycle, identify the effects of natural disasters, identify basic tools
used for measuring weather, and describe the changes in weather from season to season all are
important skills towards understanding the way the world around us works and affects how we
live.
