The problem and the inadequacies of the current situation


Mrs.HaleyAkmed,HeadofICT,feelsthatourcurrentschoolrulesareoutofdateanddo
noteffectivelyaddressdigitalcitizenship.Shefeelsthateveryoneinvolvedintheschool
communityinprimaryschool(K5),middleschool(68)andupperschool(912)needsto
supporttheresponsible,ethicalandlegalusesofcomputerbasedtechnologies.
Currently,thereisnodigitalcitizenshipprogramintheschool.Mostofthestudents
haveneverheardaboutdigitalcitizenshipandthecurrentrulesdonotaddressissues
relatingtotheinternet.Theseissuesincludeissuessuchascyberbullying,netiquette
andcopyright.Recentlyagrade8studentalsotriedtouseasniffingprogramtohack
intotheschoolserverbycollectingpasswords.Thisisnotthefirsttimethatgrade8
studentshavegottenintroublebytryingtobypassingsecuritymeasures.Mrs.Akmed
feelsstronglythatgrade8studentsneedtobeinvolvedinleadingthedigitalcitizenship
campaignintheschool.

IntheinterviewconductedwithMrs.AkmedonMay4,2009,sheindicatedthatshewould
liketoorganizeacollaborativeprojectingrade8toformulateaschoolwidesetofrulesfor
digitalcitizenship.Atthesametimeshefeelsthatgrade8isakeyyeargrouptolearnabout
theseriousconsequencesthathaveresultedinthemisuseofcomputers.Mrs.Akmedwould
toorganizethegrade8studentsintoteamsinordertotakeactionandorganizedigital
citizenshipawarenessactivitesacrosstheschool.
