SUBJECT: Student Alumni Association(SAA)
The Student Alumni Association can be described as a sub committee part of
the UTEP studen discourse community, which focuses on maintaining UTEP's
long standing historical traditions alive through the attending students as the
years pass. The organization celebrates the yearly traditions on their
respective calendar dates. Not only are traditions kept alive but new ones are
created every year as a new student administration takes power. The SAA
organization also creates a connection between present and former students
in order to form connections in general. Students may take advantage of
such connections if any exist for future reference when its time to get a job
after college. In a way SAA empowers you with the ability or gives you a
better chance to meet your potential future employer.
This specific organization has a positive impact on UTEP not only preserves
its long standing traditions but, it also informs studentss and the community
of current events and participates in community service projects such as
painting and repairing low income homes. It helps spread and create school
spirit, awareness and involvement within the utep community. It gives
students an opportunity to experience being involved in an organization that
creates a sense of brotherhood and fraternity between peers and friends.
Through SAA you have an opportunity of meeting new people and forge new
friendships through out the journey that is college. Members of SAA obtain a
chance to participate in school events and thus experiencing various points
of view that is college in which you get to see different aspects of it.
Unfortunately, the organization faces the problem that it is not very large in
the terms of members in the group. In every organization you will face the
obstacle of not enough active members within. Groups or clubs tend to
always shrink as the year goes by and thus only having the regular
members. Without the right loyal manpower, the association becomes
limited to type of activities can be done and how to keep expanding the
group. This problem can be described as a general difficulty that affects all
organizations eventually but to an organization as important as SAA it can
become far mor serious than it seems. When it comes to making certain
events which fall under the jurisdiction of SAA it becomes difficult to achieve
100% effectiveness due to the lack of members.
The organization uses different forms of mass communication mainly
focusing on the mass exploitation of social media. It can be argued that the
main form of communication is through the general meetings where all of
the members meet to talk about current and upcoming events as well raise
their opinions, suggestions and vote on what path should the organization
take. During the meetings the members interact through various activities
that have been designed in order to establish confidence between members.
General information is given and discussed through out the meeting. Another
form of communication of SAA involves meeting of the sub committees of
the organization in which specific subjects are discussed more depth
depending on the committee in order to perform more activities for the

members and school. The executive board of SAA send weekly digital
newsletters via email which contain general information and updates of
current and upcoming events. This newsletter is intended to keep members
informed through out the year even when there are no meetings in session.
The group also has a text message server where constant messages are sent
through out the weeks with important event information. The group has also
created a general Facebook page in which information is posted and
constantly updated and is also a way in which members can digitally
interact. The group has also expanded to twitter to reach a broader audience
within the school and community and whatsapp specifically for the sub
committees to be able to keep in contact. These forms of communication
have proven highly effective so far.
The Student Alumni Association has become one of the most important
organizations on campus because of the hard work of its members. It has
established a household organization that preserves invaluable tradition and
information of UTEP. It has focused on the growth of school spirit and
tradition in order to have a more unified, friendly environment like that of
other universities have around the state and country. It's a place where
students can establish friendships that could last a lifetime.
