Unit Objective
This lesson plan is part of a unit covering abnormal behavior and psychological disorders.
Specifically, this falls under the substandard to summarize and describe distributions. The
development of understanding statistical variability as well as summarizing and describing
distributions is necessary in order to prepare students for statistical thinking in both academic
and realistic ways as described in the Common Core mathematics standard
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.6.S.P.

Lesson Objective
Content Learning Goals and Objectives
1. Given a textbook and notes, TLW select one psychological disorder.
2. Given a textbook and notes, TLW read information (if available) about the {selected}
psychological disorder.
3. Given a Student Data Collection Sheet, TLW fill out the sections of the sheet (name, date,
psychological disorder name, definition and general information about the psychological
disorder, causes, who is at risk for the condition, signs and symptoms, and treatments) with a 12
out of 12 on the rubric.
4. Given a computer and presentation software, Microsoft PowerPoint, TLW create a slideshow that
expands on the sketch that is on the Student Data Collection Sheet and features slides with the
information that is on the Student Data Collection Sheet (name, date, psychological disorder
name, definition and general information about the psychological disorder, causes, who is at risk
for the condition, signs and symptoms, and treatments) for 48 points on the rubric.
5. Given a computer and presentation software, TLW write well-organized information
pertaining to the related title of each slide, for 2 points per slide on the rubric.
6. Given a computer and presentation software, TLW effectively use presentation
effects, if necessary, for 2 points per slide on the rubric.
7. Given a computer and presentation software, TLW appropriately and purposefully
use images in the presentation, if necessary, for 2 points per slide on the rubric.
8. Given a computer and presentation software, TLW write notes in the notes section
of the software
below each slide to use during the presentation, for 2 points per slide

on the rubric.
9. Given a computer and presentation software, TLW edit, organize, and design their presentation
for 5 points on the rubric.
10.Given a computer and presentation software, TLW present his or her findings to the class for 5
points on the rubric.

Student Participation
The goal of this lesson is for students to demonstrate a clear understanding of how to collect,
organize, and summarize information on a {selected} psychological disorder. Students will spend
time gathering information from their minds, their notes, their textbook, and the internet,
specifically the National Institute of Mental Health. Students will provide a visual representation
of their work by using presentation software and will also better their presentation and public
speaking skills.

Technology Integration
Students will use the computer and the internet to access and learn information regarding a specific
psychological disorder. The students will also use/learn to use Microsoft PowerPoint or another
presentation program. Students will use this software to organize the data collected and use it to
supplement their presentation of their finding to the class as a whole. A sample of the student product
is available in the Student Product section of this lesson plan.

Background and Rationale

Students will demonstrate an ability to collect, organize, and summarize

information about a specific psychological disorder.

Students will demonstrate an ability to create a digital presentation

using Microsoft PowerPoint and present their findings through the use of this
program and notes to their peers.

Academic Language is not addressed in IDT 7061.

This lesson is a continuation of Common Core/Tennessees State

Psychology standard for grades 9-12.

Students will refer to this assignment and use it as an example to

meaningfully conceptualize other psychological disorders and the different
factors (causes, signs, symptoms, treatments, risks, etc.) that are important to
know about each condition. Students will also refer to this project when
addressing public speaking.

I am aware that the lesson will be differentiated for students who did not
master the objectives and for those ready for enrichment. However,
modifications are not covered in this course and are not part of this particular
lesson.

Problem Statement
Imagine you are a psychologist and you have been asked to assess a patient that was recently
admitted to a local mental hospital. In order to do so, you need to complete a psychological evaluation
for the patient and may even need to be assisted by a psychiatrist, for they are allowed to prescribe
medication and are usually more knowledgeable about the medical side of things. In your psychological
evaluation, you would be assessing signs and symptoms shown as well as discussed by the patient,
family history of any medical or psychological conditions, any currently known medical or psychological
conditions, and any medication being currently taken. With this wealth of information as well as
knowledge about the array of psychological disorders, you can narrow down and perhaps even help
diagnose this patient with a specific psychological disorder, in hopes that the hospital can help best
treat the patient according to the diagnosis.

Procedures and Timeline

Introduction
I will begin the class by reading the Problem Statement to cultivate student interest for the
activity.
I will then review abnormal behavior and psychological disorders.
I will provide a few examples on what abnormal behavior is as well as the differences
between psychological disorders.
I will alert students that they will have the whole class period (45 minutes) for three days
to complete this activity.
I will then tell students about the task that they will perform and show them a student
sample (see Student Product section) on the projector screen so that they have an idea of what
they are being asked to do.
I will also show students the assessment rubric that I will use on the projector screen so
that they understand exactly what I will be looking for and how it will be graded.

Procedures
Prior to the Computer (Day 1 45 minutes)
o

Teacher Procedures
o After the introduction, distribute the Student Data Collection Sheet and tell students
that this is to help them collect and organize their information.
o Remind students that they will be graded on the completion of the Student Data
Collection Sheet.
o Advise students to begin to make their selection on the psychological disorder they
will use for their presentation.
o Tell students to reread the section in their textbook or notes (if available) about the
specific psychological disorder they chose to gather information.
o Roam the room for questions or issues.
Student Procedures
o Students will choose a psychological disorder that they will use for their
presentation.
o Students will read (if available) about the specific psychological disorder in their
textbook or notes to gather information.
o Students will use the Student Data Collection Sheet to begin to organize the
information in the format that will similarly reflect the final product.

At the Computer (Day 2 45 minutes)

o

Teacher Procedures
o Have students select a computer to go to.
o Have students take their pencil and Student Data Collection Sheet to the computer
area.
o Have students open Microsoft PowerPoint.
o Demonstrate a quick overview of the functions of PowerPoint, such as creating new
slides and entering text and pictures.
o Instruct students to go ahead and name and save their sheet as their name followed
by a dash (-), the name of the psychological disorder they chose, and presentation.
(i.e. Aoife Whiteacre Schizophrenia Presentation)
o Instruct students to save their work at intervals while working, just in case.
o Have students open Mozilla Firefox or other internet browser.

Then have students go to www.nimh.nih.gov and search for their psychological

disorder to find any information they are missing on their Student Data Collection
Sheet.
o Have student record above information on their Student Data Collection Sheet.
o Have students summarize, synthesize, and place data on Microsoft PowerPoint after
they have done all of their research.
o Remind students that their PowerPoint presentations should supplement their
lecture.
o Also, show the rubric again on the board and tell students that they need to be
careful in using effects.
If effects are used, use them minimally and effectively.
The theme, if one is used, should be related and easy to see.
If images are used, use them effectively and purposefully.
o Monitor and assist as needed.
Student Procedures
o Open Microsoft PowerPoint (or other presentation program).
o Watch the short overview (by the teacher) of the simple functions of Microsoft
PowerPoint.
o Save blank sheet as name followed by a dash (-), the name of the psychological
disorder, and presentation. (i.e. Aoife Whiteacre Schizophrenia Presentation)
o Open Mozilla Firefox or other internet browser.
o Go to www.nimh.nih.gov and search for the [chosen] psychological disorder to find
any missing information on the Student Data Collection Sheet.
o Fill in information from research onto the Student Data Collection Sheet.
o Once the Student Data Collection Sheet is completed, begin creating a PowerPoint
presentation.
o Begin a new slide and select a theme, if desired.
o Make sure that there is at least:
1 slide for the name of the psychological disorder and student name
1 slide about what the psychological disorder is
1 slide about causes of the psychological disorder
1 slide about who is at risk for the psychological disorder
1 slide about signs and symptoms of the psychological disorder
1 slide about treatments for the psychological disorder
o Make sure that some notes are filled out for each slide in the Notes section.
o Make sure that the effects, pictures, and text is there effectively and purposefully.
o When all information is entered, correct any spelling or typing errors.
o Save a final copy.
o

After the Computer (Day 3 40 minutes)

o

Teacher Procedure
o Tell students to hold on to their Student Data Collection Sheet until the end of class.
o Warn student that inattentiveness to others presentations is rude and will result in
a deduction of points to their own.
o Call students one-by-one to come to the front of the room, find their saved
PowerPoint presentation, and tell them to present to the class.
o Fill out the presentation part of the rubric while each student is presenting.
Student Procedure
o Students hold on to their Student Data Collection Sheet.
o Students attentively listen to other presenters.
o Students clap after each presentation.
o Students give their presentations.

Not at the Computer

If for some reason there are not enough computers to go around, the students will still be able to
complete the entire activity, just not in the above-stated order. The students, while not at the
computer, will be able to: examine their notes and textbooks for a specific psychological disorder
and gather information that is needed as denoted on the Student Data Collection Sheet. This will
make their time at the computer go by faster, for they already have replicated on paper what it
should look like in Microsoft PowerPoint.

Closure (Day 3 5 minutes)

Ask student to give a round of applause for the class presentations as a whole.
Praise students for their work.
Ask students if they have any questions/concerns/comments.
Ask the students to turn in their Student Data Collection Sheet in the box at the front of the
classroom before they leave.
