Grade News
Edition 2; October 2, 2015

Math:
Weve wrapped up our second unit in math: Using
Numbers and Organizing Data. Recently, students
have explored different ways to name a digit, identify
place value, organize data, and find the landmarks of
a set of data.

In the next couple of lessons, students will learn how
to make ballpark estimates and explore different
algorithms and strategies for solving multi-digit
addition and subtraction problems. Following that,
we will focus on strategies for multiplication and
division. Lots of work with whole number operations
coming up!

WIN (What I Need):

**We started our first rotation of WIN groups this
past week. Some students may be working in a
small group, practicing specific skills in math or
reading. Students not in a group this session are
independently working on math practice,
nonfiction reading, working on increasing their
typing skills, or possibly pursuing an independent
project.

Writing:
Our Realistic Fiction pieces will take us into
October. We have been coming up with story
ideas by thinking about our own lives and
imaging how something thats happened to us
could turn into an idea for a fiction story. So far
weve created characters, mapped out our storys
main events, and started drafting small moment
scenes. Our next step is to finish drafting, and
then we will take our pieces through the revision
and editing process.

Reading:
Envisioning, Predicting, Inferring! These are our
three themes throughout our Character Unit.
Students will be digging deeper into the books they
are reading, analyzing their characters, and
developing theories on their character based on
what they have learned about him/her so far. This
month, students will also be participating in their first
book club. The clubs will focus on understanding
characters and building theories together.

Science/Soc. St.:
Building on the learning from our field trip to the
quarry, our science unit continues this month with a
few further investigations into rocks and minerals.

Well soon move into our first social studies learning
of the year with a short geography unit.
