Australia Day should be a day of celebration

This essay will discuss why Australia Day should be a day of celebration
and will also be referring to bringing up many past events to show why
Australia Day should be a day of celebration. The past events that shall be
used in this essay are the 1992 Mabo Case, the 2001 Reconciliation
Australia initiative and the 2008 National apology.

Firstly, the 1992 Mabo case should be a celebrated event when reflecting
for Australia Day because it has allowed Aboriginals and Torres Strait
Islanders to be able to reclaim their own land and was the result of them
for them to always fighting for what they believe in. This case all started
when Eddie Mabo had believed that all Aboriginals and Torres Strait
Islanders deserved all their equal rights because he thought everyone was
the same. Eddie had gathered up a team of Aboriginals and Torres Strait
islanders and took this into high court against the government of
Queensland to reclaim their land, which was rightfully theirs in the first
place. This was a huge event thing for Eddie Mabo to have such guts and
a huge strong belief to fight the government to get his races land back.
When the British first settled in Australia they declared all of Australia to
themselves, claiming the land was terra nullius (empty land-or land that
had belonged to nobody). As a result, Eddie took it all upon himself to take
it to the high court of Australia for the race of the Torres Strait Islanders
and Aboriginals. But really this For white Australians it was never their
land to just take when it had already had an owner and those who
originally owned this land were the Aboriginals and Torres Strait islanders.
In summary, in the 1992 the Mabo case it should always and always
should be a celebrated event when reflecting on Australia Day. Even
though the tragic and hard fought1 events that occurred throughout and at
the beginning of the Mabo case it should never be forgotten.

The 2001 Reconciliation Australian initiative2 should always be a

celebrated and ongoing celebration due its goal of to bringing all white
Australians, Torres Strait islanders and Aboriginals together. Reconciliation
Australia is an independent and national not for a profit organization
promoting reconciliation by helping build friendships between different
races, respect and trust between the wider Australian communities and
the Torres Strait islanders and Aboriginal communities. We should all

recognise that we can should all come together as one and not all as
individuals or singling just not single just one person out. We didnt have
such goals before now but such goals now show that our whole society
has changed and that we have all changed together as a country we want
what is best which is for the better for everyone within. The history of
reconciliation is very self-evident by that we must all care for each and
one another and try to understand each other, or we are seriously doomed
to fail. Reconciling with a former enemy helps to avoid feelings of revenge
upon each other in the long run, as well as anger and hatred. Its the only
way that we can assure a long lasting peace and stability. The importance
of this quote reconciliation is that while we all should come together that
we do and not forget the past events that have happened, but try to and
move on and reconcile over time to come. In reflection, to the 2001
Reconciliation Australia initiative it should always be a celebrated event
for when reflecting over Australia Day is a due fact that we all should
celebrate and coming together and becoming a stronger country in the
process.

Finally, the 2008 National apology should be a fairly celebrated event for
reflecting on Australia day as we have apologised for our mistreatment to
all of the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders who that had been
effected by the horrible choice policies of past by the governments. It was
not any typical only a little apology but a national and formal apology
done for from the government by the former Prime Minister at the time in
Kevin Rudd. The apology from Mr. Kevin Rudd had acknowledged that the
federal government and the state governments were wrongly motivated,
and had made a huge mistake, in their policies of removal of the children.
It was significant a good fact that Kevin Rudd had came up with a heartwarming filling piece of an apology that was acknowledged by what was
wrong and what was done in the past at the time. A section from Mr.
Kevin Rudds apology letter stated, To the mothers and fathers, the
brothers and sisters, for breaking up of all the families and communities
we say sorry.3 This was a significant part of his apology quote means as
he acknowledged that we were wrong by just going along and for taking
the daughters and sons of the Aboriginals and Torres Strait Islanders
families because we ruined many family bonds and friendships for these
children. They werent ours to take, therefore, an apology was necessary
in line to try and mend all the problems that past government had caused.
To this day some will are still but at least they have the closure of a formal
apology. This is evident as millions more watched the symbolic apology on
television and reacted with strong emotion, remorse, happiness and a sign
of relief. To summarise, the 2008 National apology should be a celebrated

event when reflecting on for Australia Day because despite of our old
mistakes we have reflected and built upon from them to acknowledge and
through our apology we can to come together as a whole country,
together as one.
To conclude, these three points that have been discussed in this essay
stated are the main reasons for why we should always be celebrating on
Australia Day. The Mabo case showed had what the Aboriginals believed in
and they succeeded in rightfully reclaiming what was theirs, Reconciliation
Australia has helped bring us all together to be a strong country and,
finally, the National apology in 2008 has gave given many families some
closure and they have been happier ever since. It is important that while
we celebrate Australia Day that Also not to forget everything should be
celebrated but we do shall not forget all the horrible events that occurred
before either, as they act as important reminders of.
