Volunteering at SSCE

(Oct 12th 16th 2014)

Volunteering at the Students Successful Centre to help learners
improve their skills and assist their learning was another task that I
achieved this week. Personally, it was an effective experience for me
as I applied what I have observed and I had a deep interpretation of
learners difficulties in learning the language.
Students come to the SSCE to ask for help to improve their learning
process. This week, I have volunteered to help learners succeed and
achieve their goals. At the first hour, I assisted one of the students in
grammar as she requested. Actually, this experience helped me to be
so close to learners as individuals and to identify their needs away
from the classroom. Creating questions in the different tenses was the
difficulty of the student. Firstly, I exposed her to the way of creating
questions using different tenses. As well, I supported her with different
activities to check her understanding. Generally, teaching grammar
needs a lot of practice, so learners get the chance to apply what they
understand and the teacher can evaluate the learning and teaching
process.
The second session was about practicing writing for IELTS. I would say
that it was a good experience because I was able to apply what I
observed this week as I attended two different classes about teaching
writing. I provided the student with two different practices for writing a
report about charts. I focused more on the different paragraphs of
writing a report about a chart which are introduction, body 1, body 2
and conclusion. Besides, I paid the student attention to the different
types of charts and how she can read the information included in them.
This is why students need to know how to read different charts to know
how to write the different paragraphs.

The responsibility of the teacher does not restrict only in the

classroom, so I have learnt that once I have the chance to help
learners outside the classroom, I will not hesitate. Since, this will help
me to discover more problems about learners learning and their
needs.
