Swatch and Fiber Kit: Kits should include fabric, fiber samples, and linen tester. Available at the Book

Course Description
Textile Science principles are the basis for understanding fibers, the basic structure of yarns and fabrics.
Relationships between the chemical composition of fibers and properties such as tensile strength,
flammability, elasticity, moisture absorption, and dye affinity are explored. Understanding science
principles in relation to textile properties provides basis for evaluation of textile products.
Prerequisite: FMD 101 with grade of C or better or concurrent enrollment. Study of fibers, yarns and
fabrics. Industry applications and end usage are examined. 3(3-0) F,S

Style/Mode of Teaching: Lecture presentations, audio-visual materials, demonstrations, and written
assignments
Course Objective
After successful completion of this course a student should be able to do the following:
Know and use correct terminology to identify and discuss textiles.
Analyze the textile industry and understand the evaluation of apparel and interior textiles.
Identify the chemical structure and properties of textiles (fiber, yarn, construction
method/structure, and finish, including color) and relate to textile characteristics and to scientific
principles as a means of explaining performance and serviceability.
Identify fibers, yarns, and fabrics by construction methods/structures and relate construction
methods to textile characteristics as a means of explaining performance and serviceability.
Comprehend the interrelationships of the components of textile products (fiber, yarn, construction
method/structure, and finish, including color), science principles and the importance of these
interrelationships in the selection, use, and care of textiles.
Attendance Policy: Attendance is required. Students are responsible to demonstrate their attendance
(sign-in sheet, extra credit opportunity, etc.). Students are expected to attend and participate in all
lectures and study sessions.
Quiz and Exam Supplies: Exams will be taken using SCANTRON forms supplied by the FID
department. Students are expected to appear in class ON-TIME, as the quizzes will be give in the first 10
minutes of the class. #2 pencil is required for completion of all quizzes and exams. Students will need to
secure and bring with them a #2 pencil, an eraser that erases well.

Possible Bonus Points from unannounced mini quizzes, class assignments, and pre-/post-tests
available on My FASHION LAB. These points are extra credit and cannot be earned unless you are in
class at the time the unannounced quiz or assignment is given for the class bonus assignment.
FYI: These opportunities are usually provided at times when attendance is low.
Make-Up Or Late Assignments
Assignments must be submitted by the due date..NO LATE WORK IS ACCEPTED!!
Exams and quizzes, excluding the final, at times other than the announced time and day scheduled in
the syllabus will be possible ONLY if the student provides the following AND only if completed within a
week of missing the exam:
(1) A written request is made the first week of class for conflicts such as religious holidays.
(2) A verification of participation in an official university activity is presented and arrangements
are made BEFORE the exam.
(3) A medical statement is provided. The medical statement must state the student was too ill to
attend class and take the exam on the scheduled date. It is the students responsibility to provide
this verification.
OFFICIAL CLASS CANCELLATION: If classes are officially canceled on an exam, quiz or assignment
day, come prepared the next class period!

Course Policies: Students are expected to attend and participate in all lectures, to complete all
work honestly, and to take exams at the scheduled time. Instruction sheets will be distributed to
supplement the course, as needed.
All assignments, quizzes & exams must be identified with student's name. Lecture moves quickly.
PowerPoint Slides will be available on Blackboard and are intended to assist you in taking notes in class.
Dropping Class: It is the students responsibility to understand the Universitys procedure for dropping a
class. If you stop attending this class but do not follow proper procedure for dropping the class, you will
receive a failing grade and will also be financially obligated to pay for the class. For information about

Policy on Use of Cell Phones in Classes: As a member of the learning community, each student has a
responsibility to other students who are members of the community. When cell phones or pagers ring
and students respond in class or leave class to respond, it disrupts the class. Therefore, the Office of the
Provost prohibits the use by students of cell phones, pagers, PDAs, or similar communication devices
during scheduled classes. All such devices must be turned off or put in a silent (vibrate) mode and
ordinarily should not be taken out during class. Given the fact that these same communication devices
are an integral part of the Universitys emergency notification system, an exception to this policy would
occur when numerous devices activate simultaneously. When this occurs, students may consult their
devices to determine if a university emergency exists. If that is not the case, the devices should be
immediately returned to silent mode and put away. Other exceptions to this policy may be granted at the
discretion of the instructor.
