Areas of Interest:
My areas of academic interest include methods for
teaching
idioms,
Phonology,
Educational
Technology, tools for accent reduction and music.
Southerners seem particularly verbose in the use of
idioms. Many of those familiar to me are from my
Memphis born mother, whose repartee was made
colorful by their frequent use. For the Masters
degree scholarly paper, I chose to conduct a
research study comparing methods of instruction
for teaching idioms. A link to that paper is located
in the Education section below.

Educ 533 Educational Technology

Paper shows great knowledge of

the subject matter and how
technology can be used to
facilitate the speech development
of ELL students. Well Done!
Dr. Emma Coody-Mitchell,
Associate Professor of Education at
CNU
Dr. Cody-Mitchell encouraged me to
develop this into a research study as
the basis for a doctorial thesis.

I find Educational Technology especially intriguing

and have made effective application of its use to
teach Speaking and Listening. I have also found the
study of Phonology fascinating. Combining those
two interests has resulted in a desire to explore
advances in technology that can be utilized for
accent reduction. A paper exploring that prospect,
Right Brain Processing and Accent Reduction
Software to Improve Prosody in Non-native
Speakers of English, can be viewed under the
Coursework tab/ TESL 566 Phonology at

TESL 565 Language and Culture

Your work and contribution in our

culture class was stellar (per
usual!).
I certainly enjoyed
reading your assignments and
comments and really appreciate
your contribution to the online
discussions and that you took the
time to interact online with many
of the internationals in the class. I
really liked your lesson too (on
disc golf, of all things!), and your
paper is a great primer on using
music in the ESL classroom,
particularly for teaching culture.

My undergraduate minor is in music. I have

continued to develop musical skills, especially
composition. I find combining music with teaching
English quite rewarding. For Speaking and
Listening, I have had my students study the lyrics
as we listen to regional music of America, such as
New Orleans Blues and Hawaiian Slack Key Guitar.
This is wonderful for developing listening skills
and simultaneously teaching culture. You can
view a paper exploring this topic entitled,
Teaching Culture through Music and English
through Culture under the Coursework tab/ TESL

Education:
Bachelor of Arts in Foreign Language from
University of AL in Birmingham, 1978
Masters in Teaching English as a Second Language
from Carson-Newman University, 2014
Scholarly Paper for MAT-TESL, Shooting Marbles
in the Dark: Comprehending Idiomatic Expressions
through Etymology
The paper examined the efficacy of teaching
idioms using the etymological elaboration
approach and contextual examples. It did this
through a small research study conducted at CNU
comparing that approach with a more traditional
approach using definitions and comparison of
contextual examples.
