Chronic Myeloid Leukemia {CML}

Blood cancer
Progressive disease
Bone marrow and other blood-forming
organs make increased numbers of
immature or abnormal leukocytes
(white blood cell)
Suppress production of normal blood
cells

Why Did I Choose to Research

Leukemia?
I knew a friend from my church that
had leukemia
Even though he was infected he had
the best attitude
I wanted to find out what was
happening to him inside

How Can You Get Leukemia?

Any blood-forming cells can turn into
leukemia cells
Leukemia cells cant mature
Over time, the cancer cells spread to
other parts of the body preventing the
other cells from working correctly

Connections To Genetics And

Mutagens

Mostly diagnosed by finding a specific

abnormality in the chromosomes
Scientists look for the Philadelphia chromosome
The philadelphia chromosome is made from
translocation of genetic material
The result gene codes that alerts signal
transduction pathways {a chemical reaction in
cells that transports info} and it leads to
uncontrollable growing cells

Symptoms And Survival Rate

weakness
fatigue
night sweats
weight loss
fever
bone pain
enlarged spleen
pain/sense of fullness in
belly
fullness after small amounts
of food

Chronic Phase:
4-5 years
Accelerated
Phase: unknown
Blastic Phase:
