Incredible Egg Lab

1. TITLE:
What happens to an egg when placed in vinegar and then into sugar?
2. ABSTRACT:
DAY 1:
Diffusion is the movement of substances from high to low. Osmosis is diffusion across a semipermeable membrane.
Semipermeable is when some things go in and some dont. Vinegar will create diffusion because it is an acid. What will happen
if an egg is transferred from vinegar to sugar. If we put the egg in vinegar then it will expand because the vinegar went into the
egg. If we put the egg in sugar then it will shrink because sugar is going to weigh down the egg.We placed an egg into a jar full
of vinegar for 3 days and we observed what happened as the sugar took over the egg.
DAY 2:
The egg got bigger in the vinegar and then when it was exposed to sugar, it shrunk.
Results. Leave space for this and complete it after the lab.
Conclusion. Leave space for this and complete it after the lab.
3. INTRODUCTION
All eggs consist of one cell. The worlds largest cell is the egg of an ostrich. In this lab we will explore the cell membrane of an
egg; the part of all cells that allows things in or keeps things out (Simon et. al. 83). Before the lab began, we observed that the
egg had a brown shell. In this lab we were wondering What happens to an egg when placed in vinegar and then into sugar?
4. HYPOTHESIS
If we put the egg in vinegar then it will expand because the vinegar went into the egg.
If we put the egg in sugar then it will shrink because sugar is going to weigh down the egg.
5. MATERIALS:
1 chicken egg
Glass jar
Vinegar
Sugar solution (Karo syrup or maple syrup)
6. PROCEDURE:
Place chicken egg in jar
Cover egg with vinegar
Leave for 3 days
Observe changes
Remove vinegar
Replace with sugar
Observe changes
7. RESULTS:
DAY 1: Qualitative Observation of Egg in Vinegar:
The egg expanded
DAY 2: Qualitative Observation of Egg in Sugar:
The egg shrunk

8. CONCLUSION:
DAY 1: Inference for Egg in Vinegar:
I think if we put the egg in vinegar then it will expand because the vinegar went into the egg.
DAY 2: Inference for Egg in Sugar:

I think if we put the egg in sugar then it will shrink because sugar is going to weigh down the egg.
