Task 2

WebQuest

http://rg023-webquest.weebly.com/index.html
WebQuest Title:
Preparing for Natural Disaster
Description:
Floods are not the only natural disaster that can affect Australia. A large
number of natural disasters can happen such as:

Earthquakes

Volcano eruptions

Cyclones

Bush fires

Droughts

With the help of scientists who study these disasters that the Australian
Government can prepare Australia for any natural disaster to reduce deaths
and damages. You will become an expert in one of these natural disasters
and help inform the people of Australia about them. You will be assigned one
of these roles: Superb Seismologist, Master Meteorologist or a Volcanologist
Valiant Volcanologist
Task:
The task will be to inform the Australian Government and citizens about the
dangers of these disasters and how to keep them safe. To do these students
will take on the roles of seismologists, meteorologists or volcanologist.
Students will analysis source material provided and in groups of three,
containing on of each scientist, create a brochure about the dangers and
safety strategies on natural disasters. After making the brochure students will
then present this information in front of the class who will pretend to be
Australia Government.

WebQuest

Task 2

WebQuest

Process:
Lesson 1:
Open a class discussion about any recent natural disaster, try to keep close to
Australia.
As a class view the first video on the Queensland Floods 2011
Discuss how the Australian Government prepared and dealt with the floods
Proceed to give students their task.
Give students roles. Ensure you can make an even amount of groups
composed of each role for later.
Allow the students to go to the webquest to begin research.
While researching students might come to misconceptions such as
Tsunamis and Tidal waves are the same: A website has been provided to
inform and correct students on this misconception
Cyclones, Hurricanes, Tornadoes are different: A website has been provided
to inform and correct students on this misconception
Volcanos are only on land: A video presentation has been provided to inform
and correct students on this misconceptions
Lesson 2:
Allow students to continue to research.
Check they are taking notes.
If students finish early can go
to http://www.stopdisastersgame.org/en/playgame.html
Begin putting students in groups of three (One Seismologist, One
Meteorologist, One Volcanologist)
Lesson 3:
Allow time for students to finish research.
Students inform their group members of the knowledge they have learned
during their research. (Use a teaching strategy such as Round Table)
To help the students share their knowledge in the groups ask these questions
for each group to discuss amongst themselves.
1. What happens during a earthquake, cyclone and volcanic eruptions
2. What are some safety strategies to use during these natural disasters
Groups that finish early can
use: http://www.stopdisastersgame.org/en/playgame.html
Lesson 4:
Inform students that in their groups they will be making a brochure to inform
the Government and the people of Australia about these natural disasters and
safety strategies they can use.
Describe what the brochure should look like (Facts, Diagrams, Pictures).

Task 2

WebQuest

Student groups will begin work on their brochure

Lesson 5:
Students will continue work on their brochure.
Inform any finished group that they need to make a presentation that will
inform the Australia Government of these disasters, using their brochure.
Lesson 6:
Students will need to be finishing work on their brochure and starting work on
presentations
Lesson 7:
Students will need to be finishing work on presentations
Lesson 8:
Groups will present their brochure
Learning Advice:
Use the webquest page as a guideline for structure of the webquest.
http://projects.edtech.sandi.net/staffdev/tpss99/mywebquest/index.htm
As well as
http://www.collier.k12.fl.us/weblessons/webquest/heylittleant/index.htm
Use www.weebly.com for easy to manipulate web design
Include pictures of various fields of scientists.
Information in their fields of science (not about the scientists but what they
know)
Introductory Video for engagement
Conclusion:

Congratulations you are now not only are you an expert in your field,
you should now know all about the natural disasters. With this
knowledge you can explain how this natural disasters affect Australia
and inform other people of the dangers. Will you continue to grow
your scientific knowledge about the Earth and its natural disasters?
Who knows when that knowledge could be useful?
