Twenty
Twenty--eighth Sunday in Ordinary Time

October 11, 2015

Dear Friends in Christ,

In todays Gospel (Mk 10:17-30) a young man
Father William McIntyre, OFM
asks Jesus what he must do to be saved. Jesus asks
Pastor
him if he observes the Commandments. The young
man replies perhaps with some pride: Teacher, all of
Father Francis Critch, OFM
these I have observed from my youth. Jesus, looking at him, loved him and said to
Parochial Vicar
him, You are lacking in one thing. Go, sell what you have, and give to the poor and
Brother Paul Santoro, OFM
you will have treasure in heaven; then come, follow me. At that statement his face

fell, and he went away sad, for he had many possessions.
No ce that Jesus did not rebuke him but looked at him with love and

challenged him to take the next step. The young man became sad, because he was

Discipleship and Wealth

Some mes we get the idea that having material wealth is a bad thing. We
may convince ourselves that it is the poor who are favored. In todays
readings, we discover that material wealth alone does not keep us from
discipleship. We will see that there are other gi s more important than
material wealth, but even so, it is how we use our gi s that ma ers most.
Todays scriptures point to the value of the gi s of wisdom, trus ng in
God, and le ng our ac ons reflect the love of God from within. It is not gold
that causes us to fall, but rather the desire for gold above all other things.
From the readings in Wisdom and Hebrews, we find the source of Gods gi s
in our lives. Wisdom is more valuable than worldly possessions. In Hebrews,
we are challenged to look at our own values and admit honestly what
controls our lives.

The Readings and their Message
Wisdom 7:7-11
Wisdom is portrayed in the form of a woman and this has
led to various interpreta ons. Some consider Wisdom as the
recrea on of an ancient god. Others maintain it is simply the
feminine form of the Hebrew word that means wisdom.
There are others who consider that if in a machista society
the feminine image has been exalted with so much emphasis, then it must mean wisdom is something extraordinary.
In this passage the king asks for wisdom that is so great that
all the riches of the world pale in comparison. In the Bible,
wisdom can be considered through various prisms: In other
words, prac cal wisdom can be considered as prudence;
theological wisdom as the knowledge of God, and cosmic
wisdom as knowledge of the secrets of the universe and life.
But this last wisdom knows well that through the use of our
mind alone, we cannot reach those secrets and such wisdom
is a gi from God.
Hebrews 4:12-13
This very brief passage is filled with theology. God is iden fied with his word and it is eec ve, powerful and cu ng.
The Word of God knows all and nothing can be hidden from
it. It was by this word that everything was created. everything lies before Gods eyes and nothing is hidden.

Mark 10:17-30
A young man approaches Jesus and he seems convinced
that he can do something to receive eternal life. It is a concern that has always been present among people. Can
something be obtained through our own merits or is it a gi
from God? In the Old Testament, wealth and riches were
considered a favor from God, a prize for living life according
to the law. In a certain manner and combined with wealth,
they appeared to be worthy of favor and blessings from
God. That Jesus would tell the young man to give up everything, which is precisely a symbol of his des ny, seems to be
a contradic on. It appears what Jesus wants to say here is
that salva on is not in the hands of human beings, but simply depends on the kindness and favor of God. Making echo
of the first reading of Wisdom, it is said that there are things
infinitely more important than material things.

Fiesta de
Sta. Teresa

seguir a Jess. El Seor espera tu renovada respuesta
a l.

La palabra de Dios es viva,
eficaz y ms penetrante que
una espada de dos filos.
Hebreos 4:12
Pero as

diversas interpretaciones.
diversos prismas: como sabidura prc ca, es decir, prudencia;

Hebreos 4:12-13
