Observation

Record:

Child: Harley Date: 15/09/15 Observer: Emma
Observation:
Harley was not himself today. He was very quiet, spending most of the time on his own, and
complaining of a tummy ache. We called Mum who mentioned he had not been well on the weekend
and would come to collect him early. While waiting to be picked up Harley and I shared a quite
moment while Harley was resting on the couch. I asked if Harley would like to choose a book for us
to read and Harley chose a book about rockets. Harley showed great interest in wanting to know
how the rockets worked as we looked at a diagram of a rocket taking off together. Ted also came
over and we talked about how the shuttles and rockets all help get the rocket up to space and into
orbit. We also looked at pictures of astronauts and the different uniforms they wear for particular
situations.

Analysis:
Harley expresses a deep interest in space and follows through on this interest with curiosity and
engagement in the rocket book. He eagerly participated in the discussion with Ted and I, sharing his
ideas and clarifying new concepts throughout the discussion. Harley was able to articulate his
thoughts and questions clearly and confidently, whilst drawing on his prior knowledge of space to
add to the discussion.
