Castillo
I married into my culture. I first met my husband when
was 17 years old. At that time I did not know much about
other cultures.
When I met my husband and found out he was Hispanic; I
could not wait to learn about his family and their culture.
I enjoyed learning all about their values, traditions,
Catholic religion and their foods.

Traditions
In our culture it is important to spend time with family.
We love telling stories, celebrating traditions, holidays
and birthdays with lots of foods, music and fun.
We celebrate birthdays and holidays with piatas,
empanadas, tamales ,cakes, and music.
One of our traditions is to have family dinner every
Sunday evening together.

Culture
My husbands Nana is from Mexico and his
Tata is from Spain, so we celebrate all of their
holidays and traditions together as a family.
We love to go to Hispanic culture and music
festivals with our parents, extended family
members and friends.

A big part of our culture is story telling

Nana loves to tell us stories in Spanish and

Story Telling

broken English about how she worked in the

crop fields growing up and factories. She
learned what it meant to be hard working.

Stories how she learned English on her own,

without being able to go to school.

Family

She tells how she expects her children and

family to be hard working citizens, and for
them to get an education.

She tells about how our family has come to be

in the United States, looking for work,
education and safety.

She tells how she raised eight children in a

very small, three bedroom home and made
sure they had everything she never had.

Home
Another part of the family culture and tradition is
that the entire family, since Nana and Tata moved
here is we have all lived and raised their children in
Peoria Arizona .
All the children and grandchildren have attended
Peoria Unified schools, most of them Alta Loma and
Peoria High School. Peoria, Arizona is a major part
of our culture and family history.

Generations
My husband and I will raise our children in our
Hispanic culture. We will continue to celebrate our
traditions as a family and hope to pass them on for
generations to come. We want our children to learn,
love and respect our religion and Hispanic culture.
Our children are being raised in Peoria, Arizona;
attend Peoria Unified Schools and will hopefully go to
Peoria High School as part of our family tradition.
