WORKSHEET ON GENETICS

SECTION A
Give the correct biological term for each of the following:
1. Individuals having two genes that influence a characteristic in the same
way.
2. The outward physical appearance of the individual.
3. A genetic cross involving two characteristics at a time.
4. A segment of a chromosome responsible for a particular characteristic.
5. A genetic constitution of an individual.

SECTION B
Complete the following statements.
1. Genetics is the study of ______.
2. In humans, the gender of a child is determined by the ______ gamete.
3. Chromosomes, other than sex chromosomes are referred to as _____.
4. Mendel’s first law is known as the law of __________.
5. Monohybrid is a cross involving _____________.

SECTION C
Write a paragraph on co-dominance and incomplete dominance.
MEMORANDUM

Section A
1. Homozygous
2. Phenotype
3. Dihybrid
4. Gene
5. Allele (5)

Section B
1. hereditary characteristics
2. father’s
3. Autosomes
4. dominance
5. one characteristic (5)

Section C

A dominant gene usually masks the appearance of the recessive gene. 

Co-dominance is when both genes/alleles are dominant and neither masks
each other, instead both alleles will be expressed, example a white cow with
brown patches.  Incomplete dominance is when neither of the alleles/genes
are dominant and therefore the genes will blend, example a cross between a
white and red flower will yield all pink flowers.  (3)
SUMMARY

From using the following resources:

www.ksu.edu/biology/pob/genetics/intre.htm
www.tuft.edu/as/wright_center/product/sa_...
www:iusd.org/uhs/apbiology/unit%20

learners are able to develop the following skills.

• Problem solving
• Format to use in genetic solutions
• Identify and explain terminology
• Relate to genetic diseases and disorders
• Analyse simple and complex monohybrid and dihybrid crosses
• Mathematical skills, ratios and %’s

The knowledge gained from the resources will assist the learners in
attaining the above skills.
Use of genetic vocabulary and understanding of the vocabulary, especially
homozygous, heterozygous, filial, phenotype, genotype, punnet, karyotype
and pedigrees.
How Mendels first and second law applies in the monohybrid and dihybrid
crosses.
Use of pedigrees and karyotypes by genetic counselors and how to identify
the different genetic disorders from the karyotypes.
