Quiz #1 Review Guide

Not to be handed in
Posted/Revised: October 12, 2010

This document is intended to help you in studying for the first quiz, which will be written in tutorials
during the week of October 18, 2010. The quiz will consist of four questions and you will be given 30 minutes
to write the quiz.
The best way to study for the quiz is to work through lots of problems. The bare minimum is to work
through all of the supplementary problems that have been given so far. You will find a handout on the
course website that lists all of the problems for the course (on the handouts page). The relevant questions
from the textbook are listed below.

You should also review the required problems from your problem sets. Solutions to the first two problem
sets have been posted on the handouts page.
Below you will find a list of questions on mathematical induction and on arguments for proving
limits. Solutions to these problems will be posted soon, but you should try them on your own first before
consulting the solutions.
Some Induction Problems.
1. Prove that n! > 2n for every integer n 4. (Remember that n! = n (n 1) 2 1 for each n 2, and
1! = 1, 0! = 1.)
2. Prove that 52n1 + 1 is divisible by 6 for all n 1.
3. The Fibonacci sequence is defined by
f1 = 1,
(a)
(b)
(c)
(d)

f2 = 1,

and

fn = fn1 + fn2 for each n > 2.

Compute f3 , f4 , f5 , and f6 .
Show that f3n is even for all n 1.
Show that fn+6 = 4fn+3 + fn for all n 1.
Show that f4n is divisible by 3 for all n 1.

4. Prove that 11n 4n is divisible by 7 for all n 1.

5. Prove that 2j 3 + 4j + 9 is divisible by 3 for all j 1.
Some Limit Problems
1. State the formal definition of the statement: lim f (x) = L.
xa

2. Find each of the following limits and prove your answer is correct using the definition of limit.
(a) lim 2x 4

(b) lim 5x 53

(c) lim 7x 2

(d) lim |4x + 5|
