1. Weather Words and What They Mean by Gail Gibbons

This book introduces weather terms and concepts in a simple and easy to understand
way for children. Even severe weather topics such as thunder
and lightning are presented in a way that isnt scary and shows
students that even the scarier types of weather is important and
part of our lives. This book is great for introducing beginning
concepts and vocabulary about the weather.
It can be used and referenced throughout the entire unit.

Little Cloud by Eric Carle


Carle, E. (1996). Little cloud. New York: Philomel Books.

This book is very simple and tells a short narrative about a small
cloud and all the different shapes that clouds can appear to take. This
book can be used as a way to engage students interest and activate
prior knowledge and experiences with clouds as a way to begin a lesson
on the different types of clouds. The book is short and simple and
doesnt take long to read making it a great introduction to a lesson
about clouds.

3. Otis and the Tornado by Loren Long


Long, L. (2011). Otis and the tornado. New York: Philomel Books.

This is a story about a tractor on a farm, one day on the farm it begins to get stormy
and a tornado occurs. Otis the tractor needs to help get all of the
animals to safety during the storm. This book is a great way to calmly
introduce the concept of severe weather for younger children and can
lead to great discussion on how we can be safe during severe weather
without scaring younger children.

Weather by Seymour Simon


Simon, S. (1993). Weather. New York: Harper Collins.

This book explores weather for children in an easy to


understand way. This book is nonfiction and includes photographs as
opposed to drawings. This book delivers facts and information and is
great for referring to throughout this lesson or for allowing students to
explore on their own.

5. The Reasons for the Seasons by Gail Gibbons

House
This book explains how earths position effects the seasons
that we experience and all of the changes and events that occur in
each season. This book explains the seasons and changes in a way
that is accessible and easy to understand for younger students. This
book is really great to supplement this unit and lessons about the
seasons for younger grades.
