Biodiversity is the sum total of all organisms in an area taking into account the diversity of

species, their genes, their populations, and their communities. Biodiversity is important to a
community because it provides many resources for a species so that multiple species arent
dependent on one resource. This prevents specie extinction. We examined the amount of
each type of car (the specie), and recorded how much of each car there is.

We were given a sheet which was assembled into the structure of the student
parking lot. There were ten rows so we split our group into three mini groups of two: one
person in charge of recording and in charge of naming. Kevin and I were in a group, Caitlyn
and Lexie were in a group, and Oscar and Zack were in a group. Andrew was in charge of
calculating the area of the parking lot. Each group was assigned a part of the lot to
assess.Kevin and I walked to the end of the parking lot where he named each car and I
recorded the data. When everyone was done we collaborated and recorded our data onto a
google doc. We then counted each kind of the car and calculated the Shannon Index.

Faculty Analysis:
Both the faculty and the student parking lot were not diverse. Both the students and the
faculty had high dominance of the same species. The students were highly dominated with
four door cars. This can be attributed to the fact that these cars are cheaper and are more
practical compared to the other species. Both the faculty and the students didnt have any
motorcycles which is a dangerous, expensive, and impractical vehicle. The faculty also had
a high dominance in the four door car but had more SUVs and Vans than the students,
partly because the faculties have families and need bigger vehicles to transport them.
