Sport Pedagogy Lesson Plan Template (Elementary and Middle School)

School: Cleveland Elementary

Grade Level: 4th and 5th graders

Lesson Focus: Movement Concepts, Catching and


Throwing a Football.

# Of students: 20 Students

Equipment and Facilities: 11 inflated medium sized


footballs, 20 colorful polly spots, and 6 orange cones.
The activity will be conducted on the blacktop.

Safety Considerations: The teacher will conduct the


activity in a quality learning environment. All
equipment used will be age appropriate and placed
in a safe manner to reduce the risk of any injuries.
Each student will be spaced out accordingly to help
prevent any conflict or injuries. The teacher will
verbally review the rules and expectations before the
start of the activity. Before the start of class, the
teacher will have knowledge of any health related
issues the students may have, which will be provided
by the school. If an emergency occur, the teacher will
remain calm while transporting the students to a safe
environment or shelter, based on the situation. If a
student is injured, the teacher will stop the activity
and have the students seated away from the injured
student while the teacher notifies the proper
authorities of the childs injuries. Each student will
be aware of the teachers signals (whistle). All
equipment will be placed on the ground/ floor while
the teacher is providing instructions and the students
hands will be placed on or above their heads.

Lesson Specifics
Behavioral Contingencies: The activities will begin

and end on the teachers cue (whistle). Students will

be given two warnings before having to sit out


quietly on the green bench for not following
directions, misbehaving, or any behavior that is not
allowed in Tiger Pride. The student will sit out for the
remainder of the activity. If a fight occurs, an adult
supervisor will be called to detain the students who
were engaged in the altercation. The rest of the
students will be seated out the way of harm until the
situation has been resolved.

Patterns.

Teaching Strategy: I will start the lesson using the


command style teaching strategy. The instruction will
be provided by using an interactive approach and
verbal cues to assist the students in understanding
the techniques that will be used during the activities.

Academic Language: The academic language that


will be addressed is cues of the skill, For catching
two primary languages will be used: Diamond
finger to the sky. Pinkies Together- fingers to the
toes. For throwing one primary word used is Lacesmake a C when holding the ball.

Student
Objectives:

Psychomotor (P): SWBAT execute the COTS of passing and catching a football with an 85%
success rate.
Cognitive (C): SWBAT recite the COTS and acknowledge when the COTS of passing and
catching a football are being demonstrated incorrectly 80% of the time.
H-R Fitness (H): SWBAT maintain at least 50% MVPA while engaging in physical activity
75% of the time.

I. Demonstrate the motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.
II. Demonstrate knowledge of movement concepts, principles and strategies that apply to the learning and

Minnows. I need two volunteers to be


sharks. Thank you. Everyone else will be
minnows. My sharks will line up on the
white line between the two cones in the
middle. The minnows will line up on the
white base line between the two cones at
the end. Sharks you will yell Minnows,
Minnows come out to play. Once the
minnows hear the sharks call they will
have to try to make it to the other side
without getting tagged. If you get tagged
you will become a shark. Are there any
questions? Ready! (Whistle blowing)

Transition
Once the whistle blows students will
freeze then be instructed to sit on a polly
spot and wait for further directions.

Set Induction:
Some of you may remember our first
week of Tiger Pride, I introduced you to
how to throw and catch a football. Today,
I will work with you a little more in depth
of the proper ways of throwing and
catching a football.
Purpose:
The purpose of this activity is to teach
the students the proper techniques of
throwing and catching a football before
being able to go into game play.

Transition :
Once the students have received the
teachers signal proceed to their activity
area, the students who are sitting in the
front row will be excused to stand on the
far white line between the cones. The
second row will be instructed to stand on
the nearest white line between the cones
across from their partner.

Lesson Core 1- Passing and Catching:


During this activity students will be
placed with a partner. Students will
practice the COTS for passing and
catching a football with a partner. The
objects of this lesson make sure the
students are demonstrating the COTS
correctly. If each partner is comfortable
with catching and throwing the football,
they will be allowed to take one step back
after five consecutive throws.

Lesson Core 2- Keep It Up:


This activity will be ran the exactly the
same. However, the purpose of this
extension is to keep the football from
touching the ground. The student will
count each consecutive throw made
between them and their partner. If the
football drops on the ground, your count
will start over. The team with the most
honest consecutive passes will get to
choose the instant activity for my next
teach (has to be teacher approved).

When the teacher blows the whistle, the
students will freeze and the football will
be placed on the ground. Those who are
holding a football will be instructed to
place the football in the equipment bag.
Those who are not holding a football will
be instructed to place the polly spots and
cones on the green bench and take a seat

ASSESSMENT TECHNIQUES: While students are practicing passing and catching the ball with their partners,
the teacher will assess the students techniques using a formal assessment. The group who is spotted doing the
technique correctly will be used as a demonstration.
