Local Commission Summary

Event Summary

The Paducah Local Human Rights Commission scheduled a Listening Tour stop for March t l, 2010. They are expecting at least 10 participants. The Mayfield Local Commission has sent three referrals to Education and Outreach as a result of the first Listening Tour.

Upcoming Events

There will be a Listening Tour stop in Paducah March t t, 2010. At the time of the report submission the location and time were not yet determined. Mary Ann Taylor will attend the National Council on Negro Women leadership summit on March 26 and 27.

Local Commission Summary

Region Two Representative Glenda Green on February 2nd sent a follow up email to Lebanon Mayor Gary Crenshaw regarding new appointments to the local commission. Spoke with Mayor Crenshaw and was informed that final appointments will be made on March 8th. Mayor Crenshaw has requested new commission training to also include mediation.

Region Two Representative Glenda Green on February 4th followed up with Shelby County Chair Gary Walls regarding request for letter of support and copy of their annual report.

Region Two Representative Glenda Green on February 4th left message for Magistrate Alvis Johnson regarding status of the city and county commissioners selections.

Region Two Representative Glenda Green on February 12th spoke with Magistrate Alvis Johnson was given the exciting news that the final appointments have been made for the brand new Mercer County Human Rights Commission. Available training dates were discussed and will be finalized at a later time.

Event Summary

Glenda Green on February 1st submitted a legal assistance request to the managing attorney. The request came from the Shelby County Chair Gary Walls regarding a letter of support from the Commission. The reason for this request was because the local commission is seeking funding from their county government.

Upcoming Events

Glenda Green is scheduled on March 11 th to conduct Sexual Harassment training at the 11 th Annual Municipal Environmental Health Association Conference, Frankfort, Kentucky.

Glenda Green has been invited to conduct Sexual Harassment training at the spring leadership conference for the Saint James African Episcopal Church, Cynthiana Kentucky. Date and time to be confirmed.

Glenda Green will conduct the agencies second conciliation training on Public Accommodation and national origin discrimination. Date and time to be confirmed.

Glenda Green will conduct new commission training for the brand new Mercer County Human Rights Commission serving the cites of Harrodsburg and Burgin and Mercer County. Date and time to be confirmed.

Glenda Green will conduct new commission training for the Lebanon Human Rights Commission. This training will include mediation which will be provided by Alteata McWilliams. Date and time to be confirmed.

Current Work Projects:

Continued work on Gallery poster unveilings for 49th and 50th posters. Unveilings are to be held during Women's History Month and during October 50th conference.

Local Commission Summary

Feb. 1 - Covington Human Rights Commission meets and discusses a variety of issues, including a Latina who says there is a pay discrepancy between Hispanics and other workers at a local nursing home. Also discussed was an issue of the county clerk treating Latinos differently when they try to register cars or trucks in Kenton County from Cincinnati and Hamilton County, Ohio.

Also, Rev. Charles Fann, chair of the Covington Human Rights Commission, later asks KCHR Field Supervisor John C.K. Fisher and other members of the Covington Human Rights Commission for help in settling new complaints about Covington police department. Fisher responded by offering diversity and sensitivity training for the department with the help of Police

Chief Lee Russo.

Feb. 8 - Fisher attended a special program at Eastern Kentucky University to honor Black History Month with guest speaker Donna Brazile, a nationally known political consultant and friend of KCHR Executive Director John J. Johnson. While at the program, Fisher spoke with Sandra Anez Powell, the chair of the Richmond Human Rights Commission.

Mrs. Powell invited Fisher and KCHR Field Supervisor Juan Pen a to participate in the Richmond Unity Breakfast on Feb. 27.

Fisher told Ms. Powell that KCHR will be at Berea College on Feb. 25 to honor former KCHR Executive Director Galen Martin and former KCHR Chair David Welch, who are both graduates of Berea College. Fisher told Ms. Powell that either he or Juan Pena would make sure she had the information on the KCHR Berea College program.

Feb. 10 - Fisher prepared a letter for KCHR Executive Director John J. Johnson to send to the mayors of Midway and Versailles to encourage appointment members of the Versailles-Midway-Woodford County Human Rights Commission to attend their monthly meetings and participate in local events. The letter extends from the KCHR "Listening Tour," led by Outreach and Education Supervisor Mary

Ann Taylor, who met in January with Woodford County Judge-Executive John "Bear" Coyle and Rod Hatt, the chair of the Versailles-Midway-Woodford County HumanRights Commission. Judge Coyle and Chairman Hatt said they wanted to encourage more participation from their local commission members and Judge Coyle suggested that Mr. Johnson send a letter to the local mayors to encourage attendance.

Feb. 16 - Fisher spoke with Ray Sexton, the acting executive director of the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Human Rights Commission, who assumed his role in January after his board parted with

former director William Wharton. .

Fisher told Sexton that KCHR would be happy to help the Lexington Human Rights Commission in any way possible, including handling discrimination cases and doing training projects that Lexington may not be able to do because of their financial situation.

Sexton told Fisher he appreciated the help and would let KCHR know when Lexington needed them. Sexton later asked Fisher about KCHR's non-profit status and Fisher referred Mr. Sexton to KCHR Attorney Morgan Ransdell for more information.

Feb. 23 - Fisher had lunch with Terry Cunningham, the president of the Maysville-Mason County NAACP, who was in Covington on another matter. Fisher invited Mr. Cunningham and members of his organization to attend the Margaret Garner Great Black Kentuckian Poster unveiling on March 4 at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

Feb. 5- Fisher met with Miya Simpson, the new director of African Student Affairs at Northern Kentucky University. Fisher explained that he had worked with Ms. Simpson's predecessor, Cynthia Pinch back-Hines, on a variety of programs in the past, including the 2007 Kentucky Civil Rights Hall of Fame program. Ms. Simpson said she would be happy to work with KCHR on other programs to inform students, staff, faculty and administrators about their civil and human rights.

Feb. 8 - Fisher attended the African/African American Student Affairs program at Eastern Kentucky University for Black History Month. The guest speaker was Donna Brazile, who managed the GoreLieberman Presidential Campaign in 2000. Fisher presented Ms. Brazile with an Unbridled Spirit Award from the Kentucky Commission on Human Rights and other gifts from KCHR Executive Director John J. Johnson, who has known Ms. Brazile from his time as an administrator with the national NAACP in Baltimore.

Feb. 12 - Fisher and fellow KCHR Field Supervisor Juan Pena attended the Latin Student program at Northern Kentucky University. The two-day conference explored ways to encourage Latin students to reach their full potential and receive educational opportunities.

Fisher met Judy "J.J.' Jackson, the director of diversity at the University of Kentucky, at the Latin conference at NKU. Fisher suggested Ms. Jackson meet soon with KCHR Executive Director John J. Johnson, and Ms. Jackson said she would be happy to host such a meeting.

Feb. 23 - Fisher sent out the program for the Margaret Garner Great Black Kentuckian Poster unveiling on March 4 to all the participants, and several responded positively by noting their places on the agenda.

Fisher also wrote a proclamation for Covington Mayor Denny Bowman to present to Mr. Donald Murphy, the executive director of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, during the Margaret Garner Great Black Kentuckian Poster unveiling on March 4.

Feb. 2- Fisher confirmed that Dr. Anne Butler, an authority on escaped slave Margaret Garner, will be one of the speakers during the Margaret Garner Great Black Kentuckian Poster unveiling at 6 p.m. on March 4, 2010, at the Freedom Center in Cincinnati.

On February 27, Field Supervisor Juan Pefia attended the Unity Breakfast in Richmond. The Richmond Human Rights Commission co-sponsored this event.

On February 8, Juan Pefia attended the monthly meeting of the Shelby Co. Human Rights Commission.

Juan Pena has contacted Mr. Paul Olinger, chair for the Hazard Human Rights Board, via email.

February 8- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia attended the monthly meeting of the Shelby County Human Rights Commission at 6:30pm at Stratton Community Center, 215 Washington Street, in Shelbyville.

February 12- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia attended the Northern Kentucky University Latino College Fair Conference. The purpose of the conference was to provide advocates and immigrant students information about post-secondary educational opportunities. Approximately 100 people attended the conference.

February 25- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia attended the recognition ceremony honoring Galen A. Martin and David O. Welch in Berea College. He also attended the monthly commission meeting in Berea prior to the ceremony.

February 27- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia attended the Unity Breakfast at Perkins Building in Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond. The Richmond Human Rights Commission co-sponsored this event. Approximately 280 people attended the event.

Upcoming Events

March 10- Field Supervisor Juan Pen a spoke at the Centro Latino Breakfast program in Shelbyville from 9:30-10:30. He gave a presentation on Kentucky Civil Rights laws along with the presentation of Captain Phil Crumpton, Kentucky State Police. Captain Crumpton spoke about the work of the Kentucky State Police. About 25 people attended the breakfast. The Shelby Prevention and the Shelbyville Centro Latino serve breakfast for the men who sit outside of Centro Latino waiting for jobs and use the opportunity to give the information on different topics.

March 24- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia is scheduled to conduct a civil rights workshop at the Catholic Church St. Joseph, 702 W. Broadway, Mayfield from 6pm to 8pm. The workshop is an effort to reach out to the immigrant population.

March 18- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia is scheduled to attend the KCHR 50th Anniversary and the Fair Housing Proclamation in Frankfort.

April 2010- Field Supervisor Juan will have a police community relations forum in Shelbyville. Details will be determined soon.

April 24- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia is scheduled to set up the agency booth at the Mexican Consul fair in Erlanger. The Mexican consulate usually attracts over 500 Hispanics and it is great opportunity to distribute information about the agency.

October 2010- Field Supervisor is scheduled to have African American and Latino Relation Conference. The summit will be at the Kentucky State University. The goal of this summit is to get as many of the leading African American and Latino leaders across the state to discuss a plan of action to promote mutual understanding and collaboration between these two populations.

October 2010- Field Supervisor is scheduled to have the 6th Annual Kentucky Hispanic and Immigrant Networking Summit in Louisville. The purpose of the summit is to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month (September 15-0ctober 15) and we would like to use this opportunity in continuing to foster greater collaboration and communication between federal and state governments and the immigrant community.

November 13- Field Supervisor Juan Pefia is scheduled to set up the agency booth at the Mexican Consul fair in Bowling Green.
