SB-172 High School Exit Exam: Suspension


Approved by Governor on October 7, 2015

The California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) was suspended on October 7,
2015. CAHSEE was removed as a graduation requirement for all 12th grade
students from 2003-04 through 2017-18. Below are additional details:
1. For 12th grade students in 2015-16, 2016-17, and 2017-18:
A. Suspended: Administration of the CAHSEE test.
B. Suspended: The requirement that each 12th grade student successfully
pass the CAHSEE as a condition of receiving a diploma.
2. Beginning in the 2003-04 school year or subsequent school years, the local
educational agencies shall grant a diploma of graduation for students who:
A. Completed 12th grade; AND
B. Met all other graduation requirements.
3. Diplomas of graduation can be granted after the bill takes effect on January 1,
2016.
4. The State Superintendent will convene an advisory panel to provide
recommendations regarding the continuation of the high school exit exam.
5. An additional bill, SB-725, was approved by the Governor on August 26, 2015. It
is an urgency statute that allows the 12th grade students in 2015 to immediately
receive their high school diploma if they met all other graduation requirements
except CAHSEE.
