Mehemea ka moemoea ahau, ko ahau anake;

Mehemea ka moemoea a tatou, ka taea e tatou

Tn koutou katoa,
What a fantastic week of weather we have had. It has been great to
see classes taking advantage of the weather and learning outside of
the 4 walls of the classroom. One such learning experience included
some classes reading a modified Gingerbread Man story. They then
had to work together and use an iPad with QR code reader to find
clues to where the Gingerbread Man had escaped to and to track him
down. Just as the story said, he was found in the Principals Office
spinning on a swivel chair! This created quite a ruckus across the
school with children looking for the Gingerbread Man throughout their
break times and some have been trying to find foxes and wolves as
well I suspect that if it continues on, we will soon have people looking for 3 little pigs! It was a most entertaining and a highly engaging
learning experience for those children and staff involved.

recently commissioned an Advisory Group to explore Early Learning

and make recommendations on improvements to this area. A couple
of key statements/recommendations include:
...successful transition from early childhood education and care
influences their later social and educational outcomes for the better.
Expert advice made it clear that a downward push in assessment practices into the first year of school in response to National Standards is having an undesirable effect on teaching practices.
policy frameworks have consistently recognised that a playbased curriculum offers the best learning experiences for the early years. This is why we believe Primary Schools should consider
using Te Whriki, rather than the New Zealand Curriculum, as a
framework for planning, assessing and evaluating in the first year
of school. This advice is particularly relevant for children who
have had no formal early childhood education before coming to
school, and so may not have developed the knowledge and dispositions needed for a smooth transition.
Report of the Advisory Group on Early Learning, NZ Ministry of Education, published 30 June, 2015.
We look forward to exploring how we can positively impact early
learning at Kerikeri Primary School by considering new approaches
that are aligned with the Advisory Group findings. This thinking is becoming increasingly evident in many future-focused schools across the
country. These philosophies are also impacting how we believe we
need to resource our junior area and the design of building projects
planned for the years ahead.

Bringing Your Own Device in 2016Information Session:

Rescheduling of date: We are opening BYOD to Year 4-6 learners in
2016. The date for this session is changing to WEDNESDAY 4th
NOVEMBER. The session will be held in Rm 5, starting at 6:30pm. If
you want to know more about BYOD and what it means for your child
as a learner next year, please note this event in your diary. My
apologies for the change in date.
Education Review Office, Term 1, 2016: We anticipate a visit from
ERO very early in Term 1, 2016. We will always have plenty to work
on, but it will be good to celebrate our progress this year and have a
fresh set of eyes give their perspective on where to next.
Appointments for 2016: We will be welcoming Marama Baker to a
Year 3-4 class and Clare Read to a Reception/New Entrants class role
in 2016. We are still in the process of appointing a teacher to open our
third Te Whakatupuranga classroom and will let you know when we
have finalised this appointment.

Sunhats: Terms 1 and 4 mean compulsory school sunhats for children

when outside. Please ensure your children have their hat at school
and it is clearly named. Thank you.
Transitions to Kerikeri High School: An urgent request for those
parents who have Year 6 pupils enrolling at Kerikeri High School to
ensure they get their paperwork in within the next few days please.
Success as Maori Hui: A reminder we will hold this Hui next week
on Wednesday 21st October starting at 5:45pm in Room 5. Please
bring a plate of kai to share. We will have a short time of sharing the
Governments vision around Mori Educational Success and then we
will share kai and have some discussion around what Mori success
should look like at Kerikeri Primary School. I would love to see our
regular whanau attendees but even more so it would be great to see
other whanau from English-medium classes attend too.
Remember the Monster Mash is coming up - have you booked in to
help out? If you cant help out, please do still bring the family along
and enjoy another opportunity to celebrate being a part of the KKPS
school community.
See you there!
