To find the quadratic model, you will be plugging the data into the model
h=a t 2 +bt +c . The data points given are just like x and y values, where the x
value is the time t in seconds and the y value is the altitude h in feet. Plug
these into the model and you will get equations with a, b and c.
Part 1: Write your 3 by 3 system of equations for a, b, and c.
4a+2b+c= 30,506
100a+10b+c= 31,250
400a+20b+c= 29,300
4a+2b+c= 30,506
-4(-396a-18b= 1,206)
-(100a+10b+c= 31,250)
1,584a+72b= -4,824
-100a-10b-c= -31,250

-96a-8b= -744
-864a-72b= -6,696
1,584a+72b= -4,824
720a= -11,520
720a= -11,520
4a+2b+c= 30,506

-(400a+20b+c= 29,300)
-400a-20b-c= -29,300

-396a-18b= 1,206
LCM: 2*2*2*3*3= 72
a= -16

-864a-72b= -6,696

Part 3: Using your solutions to the system from part 2 to form your quadratic model
of the data.
h(t)=-16t^2+285t+30,000
Part 4: Find the maximum value of the quadratic function. Make sure to show your
work.
h(t)=-16t^2+285t+30,000
-b
=t
2(a)
-285
= -285/-32 or 8.90625
2(-16)
h(285/32)= -16 (285/32)^2+285 (285/32)+30,000=
-1,269.14+2,538.28+30,000= 31,269.14
Part 5: Sketch the parabola. Label the given data plus the maximum point. A good
way to start labeling your axes is to have the lower left point be (0, 25000)
Did this project change the way you think about how math can be applied to
the real world? Write one paragraph stating what ideas changed and why. If
this project did not change the way you think, write how this project gave
further evidence to support your existing opinion about applying math. Be
specific.
This project, for the first time since word problems became build it
yourself, helped me see that applications are useful in the real world. Every
time we begin these problems in my math student career, we are never
instructed enough on what the numbers mean or what the letters mean. We
can plug them into formulas that weve understood and practiced, but when
it comes to writing our own problems out from situations, the best I can do is
copy the formulas from our instructor and hope for the best. Now, with this
project completed, I was able to see where the formula was valuable and
why. When I got 8.9 as my solution (accurate, after correct arithmetic, which
helps tremendously), and could connect that that was the time, and that the
next answer, 31,269.14, was the height, I could finally see a picture. Some
more practice is detrimental, but for once I can say I dont despise word
problems. And, in time, they might just become useful.
