AEROPLANES

Cooper approached me and asked

Emma, can I show you something? Look
what I made.
He held up his creation he had made
with the round construction set. Its an
aeroplane, he explained. He continued
to point out the wings of the plane and
pointed out where the driver sits. I asked
Cooper if it had a motor and he told me
he wasnt sure where to put it.

Together we went to the book shelf

where I showed him an Aeroplane book.
The page we looked at was a labeled
picture of a plane. Together we looked at
each part, exploring new language and
talking about how planes work. As we
went through each part, Cooper used the
construction kit to further add to his
model. He told me when he went on an
aeroplane he had to go the airport.

The play was then extended into the

block area, with Cooper beginning to
build an airport. We added toy
aeroplanes, which inspired many other
children to join the play. Together the
children worked to build an aeroplane
garage and take their aeroplanes on
short trips around the room. We spoke
about the planes needing a runway to
take off and fuel to travel, which the
children integrated into their play.

Outcome 4: Children are confident and involved
learners
- Children develop dispositions for
learning such as curiosity, cooperation,
confidence, creativity
- Commitment, enthusiasm, persistence,
imagination and reflexivity
- Children develop a range of skills and
processes such as problem solving,
enquiry, experimentation,
hypothesising, researching and
investigating
- Children transfer and adapt what they
have learned from one context to
another
- Children resource their own learning
through connecting with people, place,
technologies and natural and processed
materials

Analysis
Cooper confidently initiates conversations with
educators and shows pride in his work. He uses
descriptive language to express himself and
show his knowledge of aereoplanes. He is able
to apply newly learnt knowledge to the context
of his play while using problem solving to
consider the construction of his own plane.
Cooper made the aeroplane play relevant to his
own life by drawing on his experience
travelling on an plane, and sharing this with his
peers.
Follow up:
- Introduce other aero machines eg.
Helicopter and rockets in to play
- Have children design and create paper
planes
