SYLLABUS

Algebra II
Montgomery County R-II High school
Fall 2015

INSTRUCTIONAL GOALS
Algebra II Standards is a full year, 1 credit course. This course further emphasizes the
development of algebraic skills and is organized around various types of functions, including
linear, quadratic, exponential, logarithmic, radical, and rational functions. We will learn about
the complex number system; and solve problems involving proportions and variation. When
students study each type of function, they will learn to represent them in multiple ways,
including, verbal descriptions, equations, tables, and graphs. This course also develops problemsolving skills with the use of algebra in dealing with applications to real-world problems.
At the end of this course, you will:

Solve linear equations, inequalities, absolute value, and systems of equations,

Functions/Relations, Scatterplots
Operations with matrices
Solve quadratic equations and inequalities
Solve polynomial equations
Solve radical equations
Solve exponential and logarithmic equations

Required Materials
To successfully complete this course, you will need
Notebook Paper
Pencils
Calculator (a graphing calculator would be helpful, TI-84 or similar)
You will also need these supplies to do homework, so take them home daily or buy a
second set of them.

POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

Expectations:

Be prepared and on time to class daily. This includes bringing all supplies and
completed homework.
Follow directions the first time they are given.
Be respectful of yourself and others at all times.
All student handbook policies will be followed.

Grading Policies:
Students grades will be based on points earned during the semester on quizzes, tests, other inclass assessments, class work/homework, and the comprehensive semester exams. They will be
weighted in the following order; test will count for 60%, Quizzes 20%, homework and classwork
10%, and the semester assessment will be 10% of the final grade.
Extra credit will not be given. However, students will occasionally be offered bonus point
opportunities.

Grading Scale:
A
B
C
D
F

100 90
89 80
79 70
69 60
59 and below

An A is the letter grade that someone gets for exceptional work. This person goes over
and above what is expected of them with an excellent quality of work. A B student does very
good work. Once again they do more than is expected of them as far as classroom work goes. Just
because you do every assignment does not mean you are working at an A or B level. A C student
does what is expected of them and does okay with it. This is an average student and if you are
doing your best, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. The key point here is doing what is
expected C or doing more A or B. The choice is yours. You cannot learn math by watching
me do it. You must practice it and practice it well, just as if you were playing a sport. It is okay to
be wrong, but it is not okay not to try!
