LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

UNIT: Mathematics
GRADE LEVEL: Second Grade
TOPIC: Addition/ Rounding
THE ESSENTIAL QUESTION(s):
1. When rounding, is your sum close to the actual sum?
2. Do girls or boys have more expensive wish lists?
3. Which sum is greatest? Least?
BRIEF DESCRIPTION: Students will look at toysrus.com to find five toys that they would like for
Christmas/Birthday. The students will then plug the amounts into a spreadsheet to find the sum of the
toys on their list. The students will then add just the dollar amounts (rounding to a whole dollar) and see
if the actual sum is close to the estimated sum. The class will compare the totals together to answer the
essential questions.
CONTENT STANDARDS ADDRESSED BY PROJECT (use Nat. or State Standards and list at least
one)
2.NBT.A.4: Compare two three-digit numbers based on meanings of the hundreds, tens, and ones
digits, using >, =, and < symbols to record the results of comparisons.
2.NBT.B.5: Fluently add and subtract within 100 using strategies based on place value, properties
of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and subtraction.
2.NBT.B.6: Add up to four two-digit numbers using strategies based on place value and
properties of operations.
2.NBT.B.7. Add and subtract within 1000, using concrete models or drawings and strategies
based on place value, properties of operations, and/or the relationship between addition and
subtraction; relate the strategy to a written method. Understand that in adding or subtracting three
digit numbers, one adds or subtracts hundreds and hundreds, tens and tens, ones and ones; and
sometimes it is necessary to compose or decompose tens or hundreds.
STUDENT TECHNOLOGY STANDARD ADDRESSED BY PROJECT: (use ISTE Student Standards see class
website under Resources and list at least one)
1. Research and Information Fluency
Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information.
Students:
d. Process data and report results.
4. Critical thinking, Problem Solving, and Decision Making
Students use critical thinking skills to plan and conduct research, manage
projects, solve
problems, and make informed decisions using appropriate
digital tools and resources. Students:
b. Plan and manage activities to develop a solution or complete a
project.
6. Technology Operations and Concepts

Students demonstrate a sound understanding of technology concepts,

systems, and operations.
Students:
a. Understand and use technology systems.
LEARNING/INSTRUCTIONAL OBJECTIVES:
1. Students will use a toy ad to find and make a wish list including 5 or less toys.
2. Students will add up the amounts of the toys to find a total. (using excel)
3. Students will add just the dollar amounts, by hand, to get an estimate.
4. Students will compare the total to the estimate.
5. Students will be able to compare different amounts to see which is greater and least.
Teach students that if it is greater than $.50 then you add a dollar, and if less, you dont.
