Before the Lesson: (Develop schema, anticipatory set.)

The students will start the lesson with getting a
worksheet from the math bin Money, Money, Money.
Ask the students questions about their prior knowledge
and allow them to talk with a friend for 1 minute on
their thoughts on types of money. They are to work
independently for about 5 minutes. The teacher will
then call the class to the rug with their worksheets. The
teacher will go over the worksheet and hold up the real
money that matches the pictures on the worksheet.
The Smartboard will be up with a copy of the worksheet
that students can see the teacher circle the correct
answer and write the different money signs for the

During the Lesson: (Lecture, demonstrations,

processing, guided practice, review, reteach.) The
students will be introduced to the activity. They will be
shown the list of items from the store and where to find
the price value of each item. They then will be shown
the worksheet Show Me the Money. Upon which they
will have an example done. The teachers KEY will be
shown as an example to the class. After, the class will
ask any questions they have about the activity. When
all questions are answered the class will start the
activity. Groups will be called, the first group the purple

groups the students will work independently. The
teacher will work with the reteach group, as they may
need the most support. When worksheet is complete
the students will discuss with their partner in their
group. They will go over what items they bought and
how their money situation worked out. Once the class
has shared with their partners, they are to return back
to the rugs with their paper.

solve to figure out what items they can purchase.

Reasoning and Proof: The students will need to show
their reasoning about their items. They will need to
prove that they spent $10 or less on their five items.
Communications: The students will communicate
with their partners about the items they bought, the
total amount of money they spent, and how much
change they will get back.
Connections: The students will see how money can
be used in the real world. They will be able to connect
that a person needs money to purchase items.
Representations: The students will use fake money to
represent the real money. They will draw their change
to represent the coins and paper money.
After the Lesson: (Review and closure.) The teacher will
review the content. They will go over the amount of
each paper bill and coin. They will also go over the
names of the coins. After the class will be asked What
is one thing that you learned today? OR What is one
piece of information that you were able to review
today? After the class shares the students will be
called to put their worksheets in the done bin. The
students will be called by birthday months. (i.e. People
born in August can put their papers away now)
Mathematical Content Area(s) Addressed:

Problem solving:
Reasoning and Proof: The students will see other
answers from todays activity.
Communications: The students will be able to discuss
what they learned and/or reviewed for the lesson.
Connections:
Representations: The students will review the coins
and paper money. They will see the pictures of the
money and the money itself.
1. For the first assessment I will tap into their prior
knowledge and see what they can remember from
second grade. (paper money and their worth)
2. For the second assessment I will have them walk
around the classroom and pick out 5 food store
items. The items will have to equal or be less
than $10.

3. For the third assessment I will have them share

with a group and make sure they can articulate
that they know the information learned.

Handouts

1. I Get It the Enrichment group will receive a

worksheet with minimal cues given.
2. Get It- the Intermediate group will receive a
worksheet were the most important information is
bolded and in bigger font. The worksheet will also
rephrase the questions in a more understandable
way.
3. Reteach- the beginner/emerging group will
receive a worksheet were the most important
information is bolded and in bigger font. The
worksheet will also rephrase the questions in the
most basic way. The worksheet will also have the
dollar sign and cent sign on the page. The
students will have to circle what the correct one
to use is. These students will also have the
teachers help at the table.
There will be two handouts: the review (Money, Money,
Money) and the lesson activity (Show Me the Money)
