Topic: Trig. Lesson 3
Length of Lesson: 75 minutes

Specific
Learning
Outcomes

Develop and apply primary trigonometric ratios to solve problems that

involve right triangles.

Learning
Objectives

Students will:
1. Demonstrate their knowledge of sine and cosine to find missing sides
and angles in a right triangle.
2. Solve right triangles using the trig ratios and Pythagoreans theorem.

Introduction
(15 min)

Write on board: Grab a whiteboard, sock and marker

1) Greet students as they arrive to class. Remind students to grab a
whiteboard as they come into class
2) A tale of woe- On their whiteboards, students will solve the tale of
woe problem that is posted on the board. The expectations are that
they can work with their elbow buddy, but must show their own work
on their whiteboard. Do not erase until I have checked it over. As
students work through this, I will hand back their SLOs from unit 2.
Go through the answer on the board and make sure to have students
volunteer their own answers.
3) SLO- I have handed back the SLO sheet. If you were missing
something, you will see a sticky note somewhere throughout your
objectives. If you have no sticky notes it means that you did a good
job. To those of you who did not hand it in. You are scheduled for
fOCUS on Thursday.
4) Depending on how the Tale of Woe example went, go through one or
two more examples of using tangent to find an angle.

Body (30
min.)

1) Lesson 3: The Sine and Cosine Ratios. Have students try the first
example by themselves. Within 30 seconds, students should be
stumped and not able to solve the problem. Discuss why we cannot
solve the problem using tangent.
2) SOH CAH TOA- this saying is very important because it shows which
values we are comparing for each ratio. * it can only be used for
right triangles.
3) Lets look at the ratios- how do they compare for each angle? Using
our ratios we can find all the missing sides and angles.
4) Example #2- Lets find G. If we put yourself in G, we have the
adjacent and hypotenuse. That means we can use cosine to solve for
angle G.

5) Example #4- Have students try this one on their own to determine
which ratio to use. It might still be difficult at this point, so go through
it in detail on the board when they are finished.
6) Problem Solving- Dont get tripped up just because there are words
involved. Read the question carefully to find out what the question is
asking. Have students tell me relevant information to form a diagram

Homework:

White board questions: Students will still have white boards on

their desk. Remind students that they are not to erase their
answers until it is the next question. Do about 5 questions as a
class and make sure students are understanding.
When students have answered the questions, give them time to
work by themselves or with an elbow buddy to finish the
designate practice work. Assign what you think is appropriate for
the amount of time left to work.
