Plant Growth

Date:

10/15/2015

Subject: Science

Grade: 4

Goals/Objectives/Standards:
Students will identify parts of a seed, identity parts of a plant, and recognize basic needs of a plant.

NT.K-12.5 Technology Research tools

NT.K-12.6 Technology Problem-Solving and Decision-Making tools
Timeline/structure of lesson: I will model all of the technology tools that will be used during this experiment the day
before we get started.
Day 1
45 minutes

Monitor/Feedback
Invite students to go to The Great Plant Escape website
their Chromebooks and explore Case 1: In Search of Green
Life. Have students define the terms related to the parts of a
plant and seed. Come together as a class to make a concept
short discussion on what they

and then describe the colored pictures in writing in a shared
library folder on Google Drive for review.

Day 2
45 minutes

Provide each student with a seed, a cotton ball, and a plastic

cup. Have students soak their cotton balls in water, place
one in a clear plastic cup, and then place the seed on top of
the cotton ball. Then, tell students to illustrate on Google
Drive what they've done, and to label the parts of the seed.

Day 3
30 minutes

Remind students to check their seeds and record the seed's

appearance. Take a few minutes to visit Growing Plants
Indoors to discuss with students what plants need to grow.
Have students record those needs in their Google Drive.

Day 5

Assessment

Students need to use Graphing software to generate graphs

of the plants' growth. Print the graphs. Ask students to work
in groups to tell what the graphs show by making a
statement that begins with "I can tell that
_______________." Then have students write paragraphs
explaining what they have learned in the shared library on
Google Drive.
Student will need to answer these questions and submit
them to Edmodo with the graph they created as well.

Why do plants need roots?

What is the purpose of the stem of a plant?
What is needed for a seed to grow into a plant?
Why do we need plants?
What is the job of the seed coat?

Self Evaluation of
the Lesson

Group Discussion

how they are going to graph
the plant growth. Journal
about what they have
learned in Google Drive.
