EducationalBeliefs
IwentintoeducationbecauseIwantedtomakeadifferenceinthelivesof
others.I'velivedaveryblessedlifeandfeelthatitismycallingtosharemyknowledge,
talents,andloveforlearningwithothers.Istronglybelievethateverychilddeservesa
goodeducationandateacherwhocaresaboutthem.Notjustabouttheiracademic
achievements,butalsoabouthowtheyaredoingphysically,socially,emotionally,and
spiritually.Ibelievethateverychildcanbesuccessfulinschooliftheirneedsaremet
andthereissomeonetosupportthemandbelieveinthem.Ibelievethatpeopleare
people,andkidsarekidssomehavejusthadmoreopportunitiesorsupportthan
othersandsomeneedalittleextra.Withthatstatementinmind,Ibelievethatfairis
notalwaysequal.Everychildhasdifferentneeds.Theylearndifferentlyandaregoing
throughdifferentthingsintheirlife.Itisourjobaseducatorstogivethemthetoolsthat
theydoneedtobesuccessful.Whatonechildneedsisnotgoingtobethesamefor
everyotherchildintheclass.Weneedtodifferentiatethewaywedeliverinstruction
andoffersupportandaccommodationstothosewhoneedit.

MyStory
Mystory(andmybeliefsystem),thoughshorterthansome,hasbeenevolving
myentirelife.Irememberdevelopingasenseofcompassion,acceptance,andlovefor
helpingothersearlyoninlife.Inelementaryschool,everydayduringrecess,Iwould
gotothespecialedclassroom(backthenspecialneedsstudentswereseparatedfrom
therestoftheschool)andvolunteerasahelper.MyfavoritedaystohelpwerePE
days,whenwegottoplaywiththestudents,helpthemstretch,andsharealotof
laughs.Ivividlyrememberthinkingatsuchayoungagethatitwasunfairthatthe
specialneedsstudentswereseparatedfromtherestoftheschool.Theywerejustas
kindandhardworkingaseverybodyelse.Ilearnedalotatayoungageabouthow
peoplearedifferent,yetwereallthesame.Icarriedthisfeelingwithmethroughoutmy
entirelife.Thatiswhymystrongestbeliefineducationisthatpeoplearepeoplekids
arekidssomehavejusthadmoreopportunities,experiences,andsupportalongthe
wayandsomeneedalittleextra.
Laterinlife,thisbeliefsolidifiedwhenIworkedataYMCAsummercampasa
campcounselor.Itwasthemostmagicalplacetowork!Nobodyworemakeup,or
worriedabouttheclothestheywerewearing,ortalkedaboutwhatcooltoystheyhadat

homeortheboystheyhadcrusheson.Itwasaplacewherepeoplecouldbe
themselvesandbeacceptedforwhotheywere.DuringmysummersatcampI
counseledcabinsofgirlsaged815fromallwalksoflife.Somecamperswerebussed
infromthelocalIndianreservation,otherswereonscholarshipsandbroughttocamp
throughasocialyouthprogram,whilesomecamperspaidthefullcostandcamefrom
beautifulhomesonthesouthhill.Onceeveryonegottocamp,itdidntmatterwhere
youcamefrom,kidsjustbondedoverbeingkidsandtheirsharedinterestinhavingfun.
Everyonethrivedatcamp.Iheardalotoftoughstoriesfromcampersduringmy
summersonthelake,andsometimesIhadareallyhardtimesayinggoodbye,knowing
theyweregoingbacktoatoughplace.AsIsaidgoodbyeeachweek,bothmyselfand
thecamperswithtearsinoureyes,IrememberthinkingIamsofortunatetohavebeen
abletobearolemodel,makeanimpression,andgivethatkiddosomeloveevenifit
wasjustforafewweeksoftheirlife.Itwasworkingatsummercampthatmademe
wanttobecomeateacher.IknewIcouldconnectwithkids,helpthemgrow,andgive
themtheloveandsupportthattheyneedespeciallythosenotgettingenoughathome.
Soonafter,IbecameateachingmajoratUSD.Itwasduringmytimeinthis
program,observingclassesanddoingstudentteachingthatIdeepenedmythoughts
andfeelingsabouteducation.USDdoesareallygoodjobofexposingtheirstudentsto
alldifferenttypesofschoolsettings.Ididclassroomobservationsinwealthysuburbs,in
barrios,atacontinuationhighschool,andinareasofsouthSanDiegowherethe
majorityoftheschoolpopulationwereEnglishlearners.DuringthattimeIobservedalot
ofgreatteachers.Teachersthatclearlyknewtheirstudentswell,andlovedthem.
Teacherswhowenttheextramiletohelpkiddosintheirclassthatwerestruggling.
Teacherswhowereintouchwithstudentsacademic,physicalandemotionalneeds
sometimesofferingthemasnackiftheyknewtheymissedbreakfast,orahugifthey
werehavingatoughday.Isawtheadmirationthatsomestudentshadforthesespecial
teachersanditmadeahugeimpressiononme.Iwantedtobelikethem.Iwasvery
inspiredbymanyoftheteachersIobservedandworkedwithduringmytimeatUSD.
Ialsosawquiteafewbadteachers,andlearnedfromthemtoo.Isawteachers
whohadappearedtohavegivenuponsomeoftheirstudents.Isawteacherswho
blamedthestudentsfornotbeingmotivatedortryinghardenough.Isawlazyteachers
whohadbecomejadedbythesystem.Laterthatyear,Illneverforget,Iwastellinga
womanonanairplanethatIwasgoingtobecomeateacher.Sheturnedtomeandtold
meveryfranklyWhenyouworkwithkidsandtheydontunderstandsomething,its
nevertheirfault,itsyours.Thatstatementmadesuchahugeimpressiononme.
Everytimemyclassdoesntunderstandsomething,insteadofbeingfrustratedwith
them,IthinkabouthowImustnothavebeenclearenough,orIshouldteachthe
conceptinanotherway,ormaybethatstudentneedssomeextrasupport.Allofthese

thingscontributedtomybeliefthatallstudentscanbesuccessfuliftheirneedsaremet
andtheyhaveateacherwhocaresaboutthem.

MyProfessionalExperience
Istartedmypathineducationwith4yearsofstudyattheUniversityofSan
DiegowhereIearnedadegreeinliberalstudiesandmyteachingcredential.Ivetaught
4yearsin4thgradeandsubbedingradesK6.DuringmytimeatUSDIspenta
semesterabroadinMadrid,SpainwhereIlearnedtospeakSpanishwhichhashelped
mygreatlyinmycareer.ThroughtheeducationprogramatUSDIexperiencedmany
differenttypesofclassroomsettingsthroughmy5practicumexperiences.Iworkedata
rangeofschoolsfromelementarytohighschoolservingavarietyofstudent
populations.IstudenttaughtatOceanBeachElementaryunderamasterteacherfor
halfofaschoolyear.AfterstudentteachingIspentthespringlongtermsubbingina
2ndandthena3rdgradeclassroomatBalboaElementary.ItwasatBalboawhereI
wastrainedinteachingEnglishLanguageDevelopment.Ialsoparticipatedinanhour
ofveryfocusedreadinginstructionbasedonleveleachday.Thisprovidedremediation,
intervention,andenrichmentforstudents.Ireceivedmyfirstfulltimeteachingposition
atSaintJamesAcademyin2012.Ihavebeenteaching4thgradeatSJAeversince.
DuringmytimeatSaintJamesAcademyIhavebecomethetechnologychairand
coach.Wehavea1:to:1iPadprogramsoIhavehadtheopportunitytoattendmultiple
professionaldevelopmentconferencesaroundiPadsandtechnology.Ihaveputon
severaltechnologyinserviceworkshopsforthefacultyandstaffatmyschool.I've
implementedprojectbasedlearningintomyclassroomandhaveworkedwithother
teachersonusingPBLintheirownclassroomsaswell.Icontinuetosharemy
professionalgrowthwithmycolleaguesatourmonthlycurriculummeetings.

LeadershipStyle

Iwasbornanaturalleader,butrecentlyIhavegrownalotinmyleadership
practicesandwouldconsidermyselfademocraticleader.Ibelievethateveryones
uniqueexperiencescreateawealthofknowledgewhenbroughttogetherinacollective.
Allteachersareleaderstosomedegree.Theyallhavedifferentopinionsandexpertise,
soitdoesnotmakesensetosilencetheirvoicesordemandthattheydocertainthings.
Withthatsaid,Ialsobelievethatschoolsneedstructureinordertoaccomplishtheir
goals.Bydemonstratingservantleadership,anddistributiveleadership,youcancreate
acultureofmutualrespectandatthesametimeensurethatteachersfeelempowered
andthattheyhavesomecontroloftheirworkenvironment.Whenadministratorsand
teacherscometogethertomakeimportantdecisionsabouttheschool,everyoneis
goingtohavethestudentsbestinterestsatheart.Thatwilldrivethedecisionstobethe

bestfitforeachstakeholderinthecommunity.AsanadministratorIwouldalsobesure
tohaveanopendoorpolicy.Itisimportanttohaveanopenlineofcommunication
betweenteachersandadministrators,andalsotobuildthatsenseoftrustandreliance.
Ithinkthatthemajorityofpeoplewhohavechoseneducationastheirpath,aremore
likelytobeintrinsicallymotivatedpeople.Byempoweringteachers,givingthemasay,
andrespectingtheirknowledgeandexperience,aschoolstaffcanworktogetherto
accomplishgreatthings.

MyNonnegotiables
IfIwereanadministratorinaschool,IknowthatIwouldhaveveryhigh
expectationsofmyteachers.Withthatsaid,Imustalsoholdmyselfaccountableto
veryhighexpectationsandstandards.Thereareafewthingsthatarenonnegotiableto
methingsthatIwouldandalreadydofightreallyhardtoensureexistinmyschool.The
firstideathatIthinkisofutmostimportanceistoembedintothecultureofthestaffa
commitmenttoexcellence.MeaningthatIwouldexpectmyteachers(andself)to
alwaysbewillingtolearnandgrow.Ineverwantmyselforotherteacherstobecome
stagnantorlazyintheirteachingstyle.Therearealwaysgoingtobenewer,better,and
moreengagingwaystodelivercontenttostudents.Teachersandadministratorsshould
workhardtoalwaysbethebesteducatorthattheycanbe.Asaleader,Iwouldneedto
modelthisformystaffandsharemyloveforlearning.Thiscommitmenttoexcellence
wouldbecomecontagiousandaffectthestudentsinapositiveway.Mysecond
nonnegotiableitemisthatfacultyandstaffneedtobeteamplayers.Beingwillingto
workwithothersisessentialtobuildingcommunity,creatingapositiveatmosphere,and
growinginourprofession.Alongwiththat,Iholdmyselfaccountabletosupportingmy
colleaguesandalwayshavingtheirback.Iknowfrompersonalexperiencethatparents
orotherstakeholderscanbecomeupsetaboutsituationsinschools.Ithinkitisreally
importantthattheleaderalwaysstandsupfortheirteachersandhastheirback(evenif
itmeansthattheremayneedtobeaseriousconversationwiththatteacheratalater
time).Ifteachersandadministratorsdontstandupforoneanother,itcreatesan
unhealthydivideintheschool.Itisimportantfortheintegrityoftheschooltoremaina
unitedfront.Lastly,somethingthatIfeelverypassionatelyabout,isthateveryteacher
workingwithmeorundermemustbelieveineverysinglestudent.Everystudentcanbe
successful,andthatstartswiththeteacherswhoareworkingtoeducatethemeach
day.Iexpectteacherstogoaboveandbeyondtosupporteverystudentintheirclass.
Thatbeliefineachstudentcouldbethefactorthatcarriesthemintotheirfuture.

BeliefaboutTechnology
Ibelievethattheuseoftechnologyisahugebenefittoeducation.Ibelievethis
becauseIhavepersonallyexperiencedthebenefitsthattechnologyhasbroughttomy

classroomonamultitudeoflevels.ByusingvarioustechnologyintheclassroomIhave
seenstudentengagementgoup,Ivewitnessedstudentscommunicatingand
collaboratingonawholenewlevel,Iveseenmorestudentsbeabletoaccess
informationatdifferentiatedlevels,andsharetheirlearninginnewandcreativeways.
Thereisalwaysgoingtobeadebateoveranynewadvancementorchangein
education.Inthisscenario,somepeoplequestionthenecessityoftechnologyinthe
classrooms.Iveheardargumentsthatchildrenalreadygettoomuchscreentimeand
thattheydontneedtobegettinganymoreatschool.Iveheardotherssaythat
technologyisreplacingtheimportanceoflearningandmasteringhandwritingand
spelling.Someopposersquestionwhethertechnologyactuallyaddstostudent
achievementandifitisworthallofthefundingthatgoesintoit.Ontheotherhandthere
isalotofdiscussiononthatfactthatweareeducating21stcenturylearnersandthat
weneedtoconnectwithourstudentsinawaythatrelatestothem.Themostimportant
thingisthatnowthatsomanyschoolswithaccesstogreattechnology,theyneedto
knowhowtouseit.
TodayIwouldliketohighlighthowtechnologyhasimprovedengagement,
participation,andaccesstocurriculuminmyclassroom.Iamina1:to:1iPad
classroom,andmyfirstyearusingtheiPadsIwasfascinatedwithallofthepossibilities
forprojectsusingthesenewlearningtools.Inthatyearmanyofmyclassroomprojects
wentfromposters,dioramas,andbrochurestodigitalpresentations,screencasts,stop
motionvideos,andiMovies.ItseemedlikeeverytimeIintroducedanewprojector
applicationtotheclasstheycouldnotwaittodiveintothelessonwithexcitementand
enthusiasm.OftentimesIwouldshowtheclasshowtouseanewappandexplainwhat
theprojectguidelineswere,andthestudentswouldgoaboveandbeyondandtheir
finalproductsfrequentlyexceededmyexpectations.Moretimesthannot,thestudents
endedupteachingmenewandbetterwaystousethedevice.Thesewerereally
wonderfulexperiencesforstudentstobecreative,worktogether,andteachone
another.
ItwasthenextyearwiththeiPadsthatIlearnedwhatanincredibletoolthey
werefordifferentiatinginstruction.OneexampleofthiswaswhenIstartedcreating
mathvideosandusingamodifiedflippedteachingmodel.Duringthisyearmyclass
hadaverybroadrangeofabilitiesinmath.Ihadsomestudentswhoneededalotof
support,neededtogoataslowpace,andneededtosolidifytheirfoundation,while
otherswereeagerandreadytobechallengedandmovethroughthecurriculumata
rapidpace.Idevelopedamathworkshopwherestudentsrotatedthroughmathcenters.
Tosupportthisprogramthestudentswererequiredtowatchmathvideosforhomework
thatwouldpreviewthenextdayslesson.Thisfrontloadingtechniqueworkedwonders
formystudents.Someofmystudentswhoweremuchtooshyandnervoustoever
speakoutduringmathnowhadtheconfidencetosharetheirthoughtsandideas.My

strongerstudentswerebetterpreparedtodivedeeperintoaconcept.Thegrouping
wasfluid.Mostmornings,thestudentswouldfilloutagoogleformontheiriPadsthat
gavemeanideaoftheirunderstandingofthelesson.FromthereIcouldgroupthem
accordingly.DuringthisyearIsawmystudentsexperiencetremendousgrowthinmath.
Finallythisyear,Ihaveseenthebenefitsoftechnologybygivingstudentsbetter
accesstothecurriculum.Ihaveseveralstudentswillspecialneedsthisyear,buttwoof
themcometomind.Onestudentstruggleswithmotorskillsandwritingisespecially
difficultforhim.Heisaverybrightboy,butforyearshasavoidedwriting.Thishas
beendetrimentaltohisgradesinmostsubjectsbecausehehasnotbeenabletoclearly
articulatewhatheknows.WiththeuseoftheiPadsthisyear,heisnowtypingforall
writtenassignments.Hecanquicklytakeapictureofagraphicorganizerandtyperight
ontopofit.Heismoreengagedandparticipatingmorethanever.Ihaveanother
studentwhoisseverelydyslexic.WiththeuseoftheiPadsheisnowabletolistento
readingandfollowalongwhenstudentsarerequiredtoreadindependently.Hecan
alsodictatehisworkasawayofgettinghisthinkingonpaper.Beforetheintroduction
oftheiPadsthisyear,IwouldoftenseeTheostaringathisschoolworkinfrustration
withateartricklingdownhischeek.Hehatedthefactthathealwaysneededsomeone
tohelphimaccomplishthetasksthatallofhisclassmatescoulddo.Withthe
introductionoftheiPads,bothboysarenowproducingbeautifulworkandaremore
confidentandhappyatschool.
ThesearejustthreeexamplesofhowIhaveseentechnologybenefitmy
studentslearning.Theiraccesstocurriculum,engagementandparticipationarebetter
thaneverbefore.

BeliefonParentInvolvement
Itiswidelyknownthatparentinvolvementisakeyfactorinstudentachievement.
Therearemanyaspectsthatcontributetothiscorrelation:helpwithhomeworkand
studies,organizationalskills,preparednessforschool,selfesteem,andstudent
emotions,amongothers.TodayIamgoingtotalkaboutoneparticularfactor:student
motivation.Ibelievethatstudentsaremorelikelytobemotivatedtodowellinschool
whentheirparentsareinvolvedintheirschoollife.IbelievethisbecausegrowingupI
sawfirsthandtheimpactthatparentinvolvementhadonmybrotherslifeandIseeit
currentlyinthelivesofmystudents.

Motivationisconnectedtostudentengagementwhichisanotherhugefactorof
studentsuccess.Ireadrecentlythatstudentshavetheultimatechoiceinhowtheyare
goingtoparticipateinschool.Whenparentsareinvolvedintheirchild'sschoollife,that
studentismuchmorelikelytochoosetoengageintheirschoolwork.Additionally,
whenparentsareinterestedandinvolvedintheirchild'sacademicsitsendsthe
messagetotheirchildthatschoolisworthwhile,important,andshouldbetaken

seriously.InmyclassroomImakeitknowntostudentsandfamiliesthatteachersand
parentsareateamandmustworktogethertosupporttheirstudents.Whenstudents
knowthattheirparentsandteachersarecommunicatingitgivesthatstudentextra
incentivetoworkhardanddotheirbest.
WhenIwasgrowingup,myolderbrotherhadareallyhardtimeinschool.He
wastheyoungestinhisclass,hehadaseverecaseofADD,hefeltlikeeveryteacher
dislikedhim,andschoolworkdidnotcomenaturallyforhim.Ifmymomhadnotbeen
constantlycommunicatingwithhisteachers,helpinghimwithhishomeworkandmaking
surehehadhisassignmentsinhisbackpack,hemaynothavemadeitthrough.
Knowingthatmymomwastheretohelphimandholdhimaccountablepushedhimto
keeptrying.Later,inhighschool,Alecstillhadtoworksuperhardinschool,decidedit
wasn'tforhimandthathedidn'twanttogotocollege.Heknewthatneitherofmy
parentsfinishedcollegeandtheywere"doingfine"sowhyshouldhehaveto?Withthe
supportofmyparentsandhisteachers,mybrothernotonlyrealizedtheimportanceof
goingtocollege,butheboostedhisGPAenoughtogetintoa4yearuniversityand
graduatedwithaBachelorsdegreefouryearslater.Withoutthesupportand
involvementofmyparentstokeephimmotivated,mybrotherprobablywouldhave
droppedoutofhighschoolandneverwouldhaveearnedacollegedegree.Heisjust
oneexampleofhowparentinvolvementcanbelifechanging.
InmycurrentclassroomIalsoseeadifferenceinmotivationbetweenmy
studentswhoseparentsarehighlyinvolvedandthosewhoaren't.Irememberlastyear
whenIaskedastudentwhytheydidnotturnintheirprojecttheytoldme"onlymytutor
andmybabysitterdohomeworkwithmeandtheydidn'tknowabouttheproject".I
rememberfeelingsosadforthatchild.Theyknewtheirparentwasnevergoingtosee
theproject,letalonehelpthemwithit,sotheyhadthis"skateby"mentality.Ifrequently
sendlettershometotheparentsofmystudentsencouragingthemtocheckouttheir
childslatestproject,writingpiece,ortestgrade.Parentinvolvementisasourceof
motivation,prideandsenseofaccomplishmentformanyofmystudents.

MyBeliefAboutDiscipline
Ibelievethatanyclassroomorschooldisciplineplanneedstobeclear,
consistent,andfairinorderforittowork.Istronglybelievethisbecauseinmyfirstyear
teaching,Ihadtogrowabackboneandlearntobefirmwithmypolicies,orIwould
havebeeneatenalivebyparents.
Disciplineisatrickysubjectandteachersandadministratorshaveawideview
onit.Itisbelievedbysomethatteachersmustbefirminorderfortheirclassroomto
runsmoothly.Othersfeelthatkidsarekidsandexceptionsshouldbemadeonacase
bycasebasis.Someeducatorsfeelthatdisruptivechildrenshouldberemovedfromthe
classroomsotheydonotaffecttherestoftheclass'learning.Othersfeelthatstudents

shouldsufferconsequencesiftheyarelateorunpreparedforschool.Allteachersand
schoolleadershavearighttotheirownbehaviormanagementplan,buttheimportant
thingisthattheirexpectationsareclear,fair,andthattheyareactingonthemina
consistentmanner.
MyfirstyearteachingIwas22yearsold,hadnevertaught4thgrade,andhadno
teachingteamtosupportme.BeforetheschoolyearstartedIlooselyputtogethera
behaviorplanandhomeworkpolicyandpostedittomywebsite.Astheyearbegan,I
startedtocaveintoeveryexcuseaparentorstudentbroughttome.Imadetonsof
exceptionsandgavestudentsfartoomanywarningsabouttheirbehaviorbeforetaking
action.Bysettinguptheschoolyearlikethis,Iputmyselfinareallytoughposition.IfI
madeanexceptionforonestudent,thanitwouldn'tberighttonotexcuseanotherfor
theirlateprojectorpoorbehavior.Especiallywhentheytoldme"Itisaonetimething,I
promiseIwilldobetter".ParentsquicklygotwordoftheexceptionsthatIhadmadefor
onechild,andremindedmeofthatwhentheycameinwiththeirownrequest.They
evenstartedtoquestionmygradingandaskedthatI"relook"attheirchild's
assignmentfromtimetotime.Inafewwords,Iwasbeingwalkedallover.IfeltlikeI
hadnocontrolandthatIhadlostmyintegrityasateacher.Needlesstosay,thenext
schoolyearIcreatedveryclearpoliciesregardingbehavior,homework,andgradesand
Istucktothem.Ihadnoproblemswithparentsthatentireyear,andmyjudgementwas
neverquestionedagain.Itmadelifeeasierforme,easierforthestudents,andeasier
fortheparentsbecause"thatwasthepolicyanditwouldn'tbefairtootherstomakean
exceptionforonechildandnotanother".Asaschoolleaderyoumustalsobe
consistentinfollowingschoolproceduresandpoliciestomaintainafairandorderly
schoolenvironment.

MyBeliefsonCurriculumandInstruction
Ibelievethatcurriculumiscriticaltoensurethatstudentsreceiveabalanced,
wellroundededucation.Thatcurriculumshouldberigorous,developmentally
appropriate,andshouldbefocusedonpreparingstudentsforbecomingglobalcitizens.
Inadditiontothat,Ibelievethatstudentsareentitledtoqualityinstructionofthat
curriculumandthateverystudentdeservestohaveateacherthatiscommittedto
excellence.IbelievethisbecauseIwasluckytohavegreatteachersgrowingup.Ican
thinkofspecificlifeskillsthatIlearnedfromindividualeducators.Forexample,Ihave
alwaysfeltcomfortablespeakinginfrontofothersbecausemy4thgradeteachertaught
ushowtoproperlywriteanddeliveraspeechandwepracticedthisskillbygivinga
speechonceamonthallyearlong.My6thgradeteachertaughtmetolovereading.
Shereadaloudtouseverysingledaywhilewepracticedhandwritingandleftusonthe
edgeofourseatseveryafternoon.ShealsohandpickednovelsthatsheknewIwould
beinterestedin.FromthatgradeonIunderstoodwhatagiftitwastobeabletoread

andIbecameavoraciousreader.Inhighschool,myASBteacherinstilledinmewhatit
meanttobealeader,andtaughtmethatIcouldhaveatremendousimpactonthe
peoplearoundme.WhatIamtryingtoexplainwiththoseexamplesisthatquality
teachersandqualityinstructioncanaffectstudentsfortherestoftheirlives.Curriculum
istheskeletonandteachersaretheheart.Togethertheycanfostercriticalthinking
skills,creativity,collaboration,communication,curiosity,andaloveforlearning.

Mybeliefsabouteducationshavedevelopedandchangedovertheyears.Asan
