Lesson Self- Assessment (please # each SA to correspond to the lesson)

Name: Sara Bucholtz

Lesson topic: Ionic and Covalent Compoiunds
Date: 10-16-15
School/grade level/ number of students: Milwaukee School of Languages/8th/19 1st and 40
2nd hour
Name of Cooperating Teacher: Rob LaPlant
Planning and preparation: Describe how your plan provided opportunities for active
engagement. How did you provide for the needs of diverse learners? Did you adjust your plan in
any way? Describe how and why if you did.
My plan provided opportunities for active engagement when we read section as a class. Students
could volunteer to read and when I had the students fill out a graphic organizer which compared
the difference between ionic and covalent compounds and the students had to define the two
compounds in their own words. I knew that there were some students in the class that struggled
with reading and some of the terms in this section would be hard to understand so had the class
read section one of chapter 3 as a whole group. During my lesson we ended early so I asked
students come up with examples of ionic and covalent compounds.
Classroom environment: Evaluate the ways in which your encouraged student participation.
How did you elicit student responses? How did you engage them in responding to you and each
other? Evaluate your plan for individual, small group and/or whole class work. How effective
were these different organizational techniques for keeping students involved in your lesson?
In my first hour class I did not have trouble with students participating but I noticed that it was
the same students answering so for my second hour class I did what my CT does and I threw a
ball to the student who was reading and I got more students to volunteer. When the students were
working on their graphic organizers I had them work on their own for a while and then I gave
them a few minutes to work with their groups.
Instruction: Evaluate your choices of instructional strategies. Did they have the effect you
intended? Were the needs of all learners met? What changes would you make if you repeated this
lesson?
If I were to repeat this lesson I would have the students answer the questions at the end of the
section or have an exit slip for them to fill out because this lesson was too easy for the class and
ended early.
Assessment: What assessment processes did you plan and how did they work? What did you
learn from listening to student responses, examining their work or listening to their interactions?
How well did your assessment procedures inform you about student attainment of your lessons
objectives?

My assessment for the students was the graphic organizer. From watching the students work on it
and from reading their papers I was pleased to see a lot of them defined ionic and covalent
compounds in their own words. Also the students seemed to understand the main characteristics
of ionic and covalent compounds from reading their graphic organizers. Also I did an activity
with the students where they had to say if the compound was ionic or covalent by looking at their
melting point and student could answer it very easily.
Professional responsibilities: What did you learn from your cooperating teachers feedback on
this lesson? How will you apply it to future lessons?
I learned that I need to make sure that all the students are focused when I am using a PowerPoint
and that I should have the students turn their chair towards the board when giving a PowerPoint.
I will make sure I do that the next I use one. Also I should try an exit slip to help students stay
focus at the end of the lesson.
Reflection: What did you learn about student learning and assessing from this lesson? How will
it affect your planning for future teaching?
I learned that the students enjoyed doing the graphic organizer and I will continue to use them. I learned
that I need to work on keeping them focus while giving a PowerPoint and that I will use the ball to get
volunteers every time because I get more people willing to read.
The Wisconsin teaching standard I improved in was standard 9, which is teachers can evaluate and reflect.
I noticed that although there were students volunteering to read, only a few kept raising their hand so
decided to use the ball with my next hour and I got a lot more volunteers.
The Alverno ability I improved on was communication because I used technology to help teach my
lesson. I used a PowerPoint to do an activity at the end of my lesson.
