MATH LESSON PLAN (4th grade)

Outcomes:

(WI Teacher Standards #1, 2)

CCSS. 4.1. NBT Generalize place value understanding for whole and multi digit numbers.
Instructional objective(s): Students will begin to practice to identify, read, and write the values of multi
digit numbers.
Students will construct multi digit numbers and define the place value for their own mathematical use.

Assessment:

(WI Teacher Standard #8)

How will you determine if the lesson objective was met?

Informal assessment: Students will be informally assessed as we solve problems as a large group. I will
monitor student participation and students will share their learning with partners where I will observe
their use of place value words.
(WI Teacher Standard #3)
Materials Needed:

math notebooks, pencils, dry erase place value charts, dry erase markers
Total time needed: 40 minutes

Procedures:
Procedures:

(WI Teacher Standard #7)

Introduction: (5 minutes) Today we are going to learn about place value. How many of you have
worked with place value before? Today we are going to explore together. Lets start by counting by
tens then 100s.
Steps for instruction: (20 minutes)
Demonstration/participation: Display a list of multi digit numbers with one number underlined. Model

for students how to record that number in the correct section of their place value chart. Identify each
place value and explain why.
Continue working through multi digit numbers. Have students turn and talk to verbally illustrate their

understanding. Have students continue to participate through use of the place value charts.
Practice: Provide students with an activity sheet involving place value identification. Review the

questions. (15 minutes)

Encourage students to use their place value charts if needed.
Circulate and provide scaffold support for students as needed.
Strategies for students requiring additional assistance: (WI Teacher Standard # 3)
Take the time when students are practicing to circulate and provide the needed support as needed.

Remodel my thinking if students are struggling. If students are excelling provide them with an activity
sheet that requires a high level of place value knowledge.

Closure: Students turn in their activity sheet as their exit slip. Remind students that place value
knowledge is important in our mathematical growth
